wow
I was at a restaurant called the Cranberry Thistle in Jonesborough over the weekend and saw a poster promoting a Hank Williams tribute show with Kayton Roberts playing steel this coming Saturday night at 8 PM. WOW, WOW, WOW!!!
Bobby Loveday has Kayton's number is calling him and I am going to email him to encourage him to join us. If he would consent to play, that would be awesome, but just having him in attendance would be just wonderful. If you are not familar with Kayton, he played for many years with Hank Snow on the Grand Old Opry. He plays a lap steel that is mounted on very short legs. He is unbelievable with what he can get out of that steel. He will make you want to cut the pedal rods off your steel. Jeff Newman told me once that if Kayton had ever took up the pedal steel, nobody could have topped him.
So, here is the deal: The show starts promptly at 8 PM at the Cranberry Thistle, which is located at 107 East Main St in Jonesborough. There is very limited seating, but they will take a few more in for standing room only. I don't think they can seat more than 75 people, if that. And some of the seating is in a back room where you cant' even see the small stage. They can seat maybe 25 people, if that, in front of the stage. The cost is $10.00 per person, which includes Dinner. What a deal. They do take reservations, which I would very highly recommend. Their phone number is 753-0090. I would also recommend you get there no later than 7 PM to get a good seat and to eat.
I will let you know if Kayton confirms that he will be able to attend the jam. He is riding with the singer, so he may be on his schedule.
Unfortunately, I am playing and will not be able to attend.
Bobby Loveday is bringing his steel to the jam and will be playing steel this time instead of lead guitar.
Do we have a band or is it going to be tracks only?
Looking forward to seeing everybody on Saturday.
George

KAYTON ROBERTS possibly attending the Johnson City Jam
One more thing, the Cranberry Thistle is a bit hard to notice from the street. The sign is up high and above eye level. It is right across the street from the courthouse, just a little to the left if your back is to the court house. They have a screen door entrance. Johnny Kiser parked his car right in front of it and walked up and down both street looking for it. He finally found it less than 10 feet from his car as he was getting ready to give up and leave.

Dennis just called and said Bobby Loveday called him and wants them to play backup for the steel jam. Dennis on the drums and Bobby on the bass. They plan on playing without a lead player. I told him to come on up.
I will still bring my old amp and Mike Archer is to bring a cd player for the tracks incase "Murphy" shows up. Also Wayne Morgan called, he is feeling much better and he will be there without his steel.

Many thanks to all for making me welcome - I didn't take a guitar, but thoroughly enjoyed listening to all the players!
Nice to hear my new friend, Bryan Adams, playing his 'new' Emmons p/p - that's a great-sounding guitar!!! Mike - 'Wichita Lineman' was exceptional...
I'm headed out for North Dakota next - I leave after tomorrow's final 'Patsy' show at the Barter Theatre - but I'll take some nice memories with me after today's event.
Oh, and a special thanks to Mike's wife, who stayed on the 'phone guiding me through the maze that is Johnson City when I found myself lost....

Many thanks to the steelers, Mike, Bryan, George, Charles, and David. A big thanks to Dennis and Bobby for playing drums and bass.
It was also nice to see Wayne out and about and to meet Roger Rettig.
Its always a pleasure to get you guys together for a good jam session. I really enjoyed myself and many thanks to Everette and the staff at the resturant for allowing us to hold it there.
Will work on getting another jam together real soon. I think I have a place in Greeneville that may let us in.

Great time
I had a great time yesterday. Didn't feel like I played my best, but I throughly enjoyed it. Meeting Roger was great, and seeing everyone else again was terrific. I liked the location, I thought it worked well. Thanks John for getting it set up.

Greeneville TN Jam Moved to Johnson City
Likewise, I really enjoyed playing. I challenged myself and tried to play songs that I have heard, but never practiced, so I messed up a lot. I did OK on Another Bridge to Burn because I had the track to that and had practiced. A lot of the songs were not in the key that I normally play them in, so that threw me a bit. I also have an eye condition called Central Cirrus and can't see very well in low light, which the venue had. I only have a few tracks, so I need to get more songs in the keys you guys do them in, and practice, and be better prepared for the next jam.
All my 40 years plus of playing steel has been in bands that I start a song, play fills, do a turnaround, and maybe an ending. I have never had a chance to play instrumentals in a band and steel jams were far and few and mostly used very good players. I have never had much motivation to learn instrumentals, figuring that the only place I would ever play them was in my bedroom. But these jams that we have been having, almost monthly, has got me inspired to learn instrumentals. All I want to accomplish at a jam is to play the best I can, not to try to compete with anybody else in any way. So far, I have played a total of 4 jams, and I have been less nervous each time and have done a little better at each one. I am looking forward to trying again and hopefully, reaching my goal of just playing as well as I am capable of, then I will be very satisfied with myself. So far, I come away pretty disgusted knowing that I can do a lot better.I am looking forward to the challenge on the next jam to see if I can just play as well as I can. So far, that has just not happened.
It was a pleasure meetiing Roger Retting and seeing all you regular guys again. Thanks so much to Charles Powell for putting the Ken Fox FET chips into my Nashville 112 while I was there. I used it Saturday night on a gig and could tell a big difference. My girlfriend noticed it and said it sounded so "pretty". The lead guitar player noticed and said it sounded a lot smoother. I tinkered with it yesterday at home, and I don't think I even need the RV 3, except for delay. The reverb in the amp sounds awfully good to me now. I am still tinkering with it and don't have a gig for two weeks to try it out, so the jury is still out. Also, I haven't tried playing with tracks yet, either.
A big thanks to John Sheffey for setting up the last two jams. John is a totally, new novice player and can't contribute to playing at a jam yet, but he is dedicated to the steel guitar and their players, and is doing what he can for the cause at this point in his life, and that is set up jams. BRAVO John!
Until next time......

George, I am glad you like the change in the 112. I personally thought it made mine sound significantly better. I noticed a good change in the reverb as well. Previously, I had been using a delay and reverb pedal (digitech hardwire series) when using this amp. Now I just use a volume pedal and some george L cables!
