I have heard that Jerry Byrd's instructional book is the beginners bible. I have not been able to find it on half.com or amazon. Does anybody know where to get one?

If I'm not mistaken, Jerry Byrd's book is available at Scotty's Music in St. Louis. Check out his web-site.

You can only get it through Scotty's. It is not cheap but well worth the price.
