I know, the ear will tell the tale, but what do you Emmons guys find as a good starting point?

I would love to know if you found something workable. I have one in a Legrande and it sound terrible no matter what I do.

Justin, could you explain what's bothering you about the PU? I just installed a couple on my Legrande III and have some issues with them, but generally they're pretty good.

John,
I'll try to put it into words without sounding like an idiot.
I have them in both necks. The mid-range is terrible. I can not get the "honk" out of them no matter what I do and the highs, although there are plenty are very shrill sounding. I have tried several different amps and still couldn't get it close to what I think it should do. I have also had some great players play it and they feel like I do. The 6th neck is not as bad so I swapped the pickups to no avail.

It could be the guitar. I have played Emmons guitars for years and even though this is a Legrande II, I know it should sound better. It is even black like it is supposed to be. The old Emmons SKH I had sounded fine.
Maybe I am expecting too much. I have owned several P/P models. I know they don't sound quite as good as them but there should be something better coming out of the guitar.

I am thinking I will try some single coils and if that doesn't do it, I will find someone who likes it's tone and let them have a go at it.

What kind of problems are you having?

Best,
Justin

I put a set in my LG III. They are not as rich or ballsy as single coils but they still sound pretty good.

Make sure the wires on the bottom of the pickup are not touching the mounting plate and they do seem to be sensitive to spacing so play with the height a little to get the best sound out of them.

The pickups are really quiet and record very well but if you are really really really into the single coil sound, you may not be completely satisfied with the humbuckers.

I had 108N's in and Emmons and didn't care for them.
I now own a Zum and the 108N is the best sounding humbucker I've tried and I've tried MANY! To me the only better one was an Emmons s/c, but I can't live with the hum.

Thanks for the comments gang. I was starting to think my ears had lost it.
The guy who builds Alumitone pickups is here in Austin now and he has graciously offered to let me try a couple of his pickups. If those don't work, I will have some magic done by my friend and yours, Jerry Wallace.

Thanks again,
Justin

Hook, were you able to get a quarter and a dime clearance on you LGIII? Mine are set as low as possible and it's not quite there. I have no issues with the way it sounds, just wondered if anyone has gotten them any lower.

Roger I never tried the quarter and dime thing, but I'll check that and get back to you. The LG III has so little room for movement with the anti-detuning/ counter force system that I made some plastic shims to put between the pickup and mounting plate to help adjustments...

Ok, first off where did you get a LeGrande III?
Now, in my LeGrande, the 108 is the ONLY pickup for me. It's has balls all the way through the spectrum.

I have my pickups set about a hunky stick thickness below the strings (I think that is about a quarter).

Roger, You know who this is from.

Bill, I was fortunate enough to get Don's LGIII back. While it was in Texas, the interem owner had Bobby Bowman change the single coils (not Emmons s/c)to 108N's and he adjusted evrything to make it play like a dream. The 108's won't let a quarter and a dime slide under, but it's pretty close. I agree, they are a great sounding pup.

Pete is dead on Roger. The quarter and dime thing is exactly where mine are with just a tad more gap on the bass side.
