A new addition to the Notecannons site for your information and edification:

http://www.notecannons.com/greenfieldguitars/brochures/brochure.html

Greenfields are not at the top of my list for design aesthetics - okay, they're one of the ugliest vintage guitars out there (okay, there, I said it). At the other end of the spectrum, this pristine National Style-4 now on sale at Gruhn's for a mere $8,000 clams.

As one of those people who think frills on a National are an absurd juxtaposition, I guess it makes sense that I think the Greenfield is quite cool. It's not ugly, it's... charming!

Charming, eh? I don't see it but that's what makes horse races.

I agree with you about the engraving on Nationals. It reminds me of all the Mack trucks you see with delicate, hand painted filigree designs. It's a 19th century aesthetic that's still holding on.

This National Style 3 is a real bargain at Gruhn's:

Only $3.5K, and sounds pretty good (to my ears).

Not as cool as a Greenfield, though.
