1st Annual Vintage San Diego Lap Steel Guitar Show

Post by Craig Prior »

Not sure if someone has already posted this but:

Interest level for a show that both displays these old instruments- and
that has professional players on hand for live performances- has been VERY HIGH!

1st Annual San Diego Vintage LAP STEEL Guitar Show.

SATURDAY MAY 22nd. 11am to 4pm

Celebrating vintage lap steel guitars of the 1920s thru 1960s.

This is a FREE Event to all buyers / sellers / and display

Mr. Jim Palenscar- owner of 'Steel Guitars of North County' - has been kind enough
to lend us his facility for the first show! Plenty of free parking! His AWESOME shop
includes an elevated performance stage, a P.A. system, and closed-circuit Video
set-up so that the audience will get a birds-eye view as the pros give demonstrations!

Jim will have 50 old LAP STEELs and consoles on display alone. Other collector friends
are bringing their old LAPS out of the closets for this event- so I am expecting a minimum
of at least 100 or more old instruments for everybody to see!

( Additionally- Jim has 70+ Pedal Steels in the other 1/2 of building!)

Starting around 12 noon performing live are:

( Plus they are skilled teachers if you'd need lessons! )

Adrian Demain- rare Kahlman double 6
Robin Henkle- Old Supro 6
Jack Butler- Old Oahu 6
Dan Yablanka- vintage Weissenborns
Robb Lawrence- vintage Gibsons 7 strings-

. . . . .and more to come!

Directions- I-5 exit at Mission Avenue- go east
( away from the ocean ) to 3375 Mission suite D.

Ribbons will be awarded for:

1. The biggest collection displayed-
2. The rarest / and or coolest instrument of the day-
3. The most unusual instrument of the day-

Jim is exceedingly gifted at set-ups and repairs to these old Laps. He just completed
a complete tear-down, and full-chrome & polish treatment to my ratty old 1939 Rickenbacher
Model 59- and it looks like a million bucks now!

Dealers- bring as many LAPS to sell as you want- no cost to sell either!

The complete emphasis is on bringing YOUR LAP STEELS out to show people!

Kindly inform other players and collectors of vintage Lap Steels.

Barney Roach- San Diego, CA

Jim, it's really great that you have this affair in honor of my lovely wife, Sandra's, Birthday. Thank you.
Seriouly, I wish I could be there to enjoy the fellowship. It's a good thing that Denise is coming out there with Joe, at least you know he'll behave himself.
Take care and have a great day.

Thought maybe just maybe Ray would make it with the Navy connections and all but Happy Birthday Sandy.

And we will "see ya down the road"

AND I always stay out of trouble (Most of the time)

Lookin forward to it.

I just picked-up the three awards this afternoon.
Decided to get laser-engraved trophies instead of
Ribbons. They cost a bit more, but they look so much nicer.

The three judged categories are:

1. Largest collection Displayed-

2. Coolest / Rarest Instrument Displayed

3. Most Unusual Instrument Displayed.

And I know for a fact some GEMs will be coming out of
the vaults for this event.

Judging will be by the performers- the 1st 5 players
that made a committment to perform.

As we don't know
each set length and change-over time, we will 'play it by ear' and have more players on stand-by.

I committed to Jim that we'd be out of his hair by close of business Saturday.

We have 8 additional tables being delivered- available on a 1st come basis. (Free) If there
is any overflow, they will go on the carpeted floor.

If you like LAP STEELs- this is the place to be
on Saturday!

Email any questions to: Vintage1@nethere.com.

There is plenty of food and drink available from
stores and cafes in the shopping center- including
a sports Bar / Grill a few doors over.

I look forward to meeting everyone Saturday!
Best regards,

Barney Roach
