Why not just have a 12-string neck? C F A C E G A C E G B D. Then you get both "chromatic" strings like on E9th, as well as the high G string.

I have a D12 with one string removed on the C neck. It would really be hard to go back to 10 strings on either neck now that I've finally gotten use to the extra strings on both.

Hi Mike,

I believe that Jeff Lampert has a Zumsteel with 10 strings on the E9 neck and 11 strings on the C6 (w/ G and D on top).

On my D12 the C6 is tuned low > high
C F A C E G A C E G (D F)
This give me the "chromatics" as well as "the" choice
I feel the D B top end is repetition of Ped 7,but I have it on my 12 lap.
Back to topic:
A D11 would be great on E9, and C6.

I HAVE OFTEN SAID THAT I NEED A 12 STRING Bb 6TH ON THE BACK NECK AND A 10 STRING ON THE OUTSIDE. IF I LEARNED AND GOT ENOUGH DEXTERITY I MIGHT BE ABLE TO DISPENSE WITH THE E9th.

Some interesting 'extra string' thoughts in this thread for those that didn't see it first time around.

Big Jim Baron plays a Fessenden D-11. His E9th includes a low E, and his C6th has high G and D.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, please.

Doesn't it just, Bob??? I was really tempted for a while, but I think it's just too late in life for such a radical move; so logical, though!

Why would you need a C# string on E9? Why not a low G#?

Just because Weldon Myrick had it on his D-10 Emmons years ago, for a short time. He recorded several songs with Connie Smith, using that tuning. Among them โ€œI'll Come Runningโ€. He didn't want to go to more than 10-strings, so; he changed it back to the routine after a while! There were no changes connected to that C#-str. Weldon told me so, so this I know!
E9-Basic D~E~F#~G#~B~E~G#~C#~D#~F# I just figure I'd like the B & E on the bottom of a 12-str. It gives a Jerry Byrd E9 - 8-str. non-pedal open tuning on strings #5 thru. #12.

That's cool...I didn't know that. Did Weldon still lower the D# to C# when he had the C# string?

So far as I know, he used the same copedent. What I do know for sure is that the C# did not change! If I had a D-12, I would use the same copedent that I use on 10-strings, both E9 & C6.

I have been playing D12 steels since I bought my first D12 MSA from Al Marcus around 1968 and have used the same copedants since I bought my first D12.

Albert Talley's Zum has 11 strings on the back neck, which he tunes to Bb6. It has the standard 10 on E9. I believe it was a special order though. Albert can play some absolutely killer stuff on that neck.

Mike, Del Mullen built me a D-11 9 & 8 and I have used it since '91. This was after they built Brumley's S-11.

Why don't all builders put 11 strings on the C6 as a matter of course? Why isn't 11 strings for the C6 neck the norm instead of the exception?
