Ok.
All you jazzmen. Here me out.
First off, I just love this song.
Pete Fountain. What can you say?
Jo Stafford, what else can you say?
Here's what I hear.
On Pete's version, the song starts off in double 3/4 time, or 6/8.
Around 0:45-0:50 seconds things change. The song kicks-up, and to me, goes into and a fast 4/4 time.
Until the song reaches about 1:40, where it goes back to a 3/4 or 6/8 time.
What do you jazz [or others, too] guys think?
Am I close in my thinking here?
God, what a beautiful song.
I included Jo's 'older' rendition. She is one of those unhearalded "greats". Don't ever forget her. Oh! She actually sang the song.
Pete only played it.

That great bassman changes the tempo. His walkin' bass actually changes the beat, basically from 3/4 to 4/4.
Am I not right?
or, Am I KNOT right?
I could be innocently cornfused.

You can get Jo Stafford CD's here:

And don't forget their infamous "house guests" Jonathan Edwards and Darlene Love, whose work is also available here.
It was my honor to play bass on their last recordings, "Stayin' Alive" and "I Am Woman". Paul Weston and Jo Stafford were also there, to drive Jonathan and Darlene home, I think. You can hear Jonathan and Darlene on their MySpace page, which is sure to whet your appetite for more.

Excellent. I had heard most of those before, but "Moonlight Bay" and "I Am Woman" were new to me. Unfortunately I had to shut it off after a few minutes; not sure why. |
