Hi
I want to try some different tunings for 6 string lap steel.
I have been using open G tuning but want to change things up a bit..
I know I can get tab books on c6 ..
are there any tab books for D tuning for blues?
Which tuning(s) would work for Hank Williams (old country) music?

For Hank Williams you might look here ON THE FORUM for the "Your Cheatin' Heart" songbook. It's in E6 tuning.

Second the recommendation for the Don Helms book. Just got it in the mail a few days ago. Now that I'm learning some steel guitar history--and filling in the gaps between pre-Don Helms and post-David Lindley--interesting to see the Jerry Byrd credit in the foreword. Great tabs and the cd music is excellent. Vocals are pretty Hank-like, too.

This tuning is fun for that swing sound and similar to a low G tuning.
1-E (or if you prefer, tune to D)
2-B
3-G
4-D
5-G
6-E (I use D gauge string and tune to E, one octave below 1st string)
It has all your majors, minors, 6th chords etc.
I use this on an acoustic steel, though it works great on electric lap too.

Hi Tim:
I use A6, E C# A F# E C#, on six strings. It is a lot like C6 and there are tabs available from Herb Remington. Jerry Byrds book, from Scotty's, is great, it introduces you to several tunings and ends with C6 A7. There are quite a few tabs and CD's with playing and back up.
