| My wife and I have an idea for a food related blog, just for grins. We want to do it on the cheap, although we might be willing to crack loose with a little money. Anyone have any advice or experience with free blog hosting like Google's? Or other advice? |

I use MovableType for my blog. They have a hosted blog service that is reasonably priced. Google has a free blog service, called Blogger. If you sign-up with a free service they will show ads of their choice on your blog. If you choose a paid service you can run your own ads. I think that Google will allow AdSense publishers to run AdSense ads on Google hosted blogs.
Blogs can be remotely hosted and maintained by the hosting companies, or you can install your own blog software if you lease space on a commercial web server. There are huge security risks hosting your own blog. I recommend that you start with a remotely hosted service and let them run their own ads.

You might consider Twitter and/or Facebook, too. Free, and you can connect with like-minded people faster than you probably could with just a blog.

Wordpress is another good option.
Depending on if and how much you want to spend, I consider Squarespace to be tops. The main benefit is that you can modify the looks of it an add some advanced things without learning about applying themes or markup code. It's all drag and drop. But their cheapest is $8/mo. |

I STRONGLY advise anybody who is not a code monkey to avoid hosting their own blog software. I see Wordpress PHP file exploit attacks in my access logs every day. I don't even use Wordpress because it is difficult to keep secured. One must be ready to apply patches as soon as they are released by Wordpress and how to lock down the various files against hackers.
Your best bet is to use a blog hosting service and let them worry about keeping it updated and safe from hackers.
Typepad is based on MovableType, which I use for my blogs. If you visit my blog and scroll down to the bottom of the right sidebar, you will see a banner for the TypePad blogging service.

WordPress has a bunch of plug-ins available that scan for attacks and spam. Also has a feature called Threat Scan that alerts you to possible injections etc. You can back it up on the server or locally and even gmail a backup to yourself as often as you like. So I'll see how it goes. WP actually has a whole lot more features than I at first thought - you can make a whole web site with it, with videos and slide shows and whatnot, not just a blog. So I'm gonna put a bunch of whatnot on it.

As you can guess, Cal is a code monkey, like me and some others on this forum. Those who lack this expertise can use free or paid blog hosting services, or Twitter, etc.
One thing I have learned since I began using Twitter, is to keep it short and sweet and to the point. They only allow you to type 140 characters, including spaces and punctuation marks.
PS: You can include your Twitter Tweets in your blog, as a JavaScript embedded object. However, you must make your Tweets public if any non-Twits are to see them.
BTW: I just recently read an article about a mass Wordpress compromise that has turned the affected websites' blogs into URL redirectors to a Buzus Trojan download server. If you run a Wordpress blog and suspect that it has been compromised, change the admin password and delete any unrecognized user accounts. Also, scan your PCs for keyloggers!
