Currently I'm addicted to open D tuning on my 6 string, but thinking of trying an 8 string with the following tuning bottom to top:
1 5 1 3 5 1 b3 b7
Anyone used this tuning or one like it? I'm trying to keep the open d intact but add the flatted 3rd and 7th on the top for chording. |

So using open D as a base, your tuning would be as follows:
1. C
2. F
3. D
4. A
5. F#
6. D
7. A
8. D
Would you pitch the second string (F) so that it's a half step lower than the fifth string? And would the first string (C) be pitched a step below the third string? It seems like a good experiment, but I don't know of anyone using that tuning variation currently.

| Right, that is how I would tune it. The thing I like about it is that I have my open d intact and I like it to be "intact" from the bottom up. Then if I need a minor or 7th chord I can grab it. |

I have an acoustic 7 string Harmony which is tuned DADF#AD or DGDGBD with strings gauges .054,.042,.030,.024,.017,.014 but the 7th string (the one closest to you) is a .020. I can tune it to C for 7th or C# for minor in DADF#AD or F for 7th or E for minor in DGDGBD. Since it's an outside string it's easy to find.

I've been thinking about this and it occurs to me that I really need to switch the top two strings: 1 5 1 3 5 1 b7 b3.
That way I can mute out the flat 3 easily with my finger and strum the 7th chord. |

What string gauges are you using for the b3 and b7? Sounds interesting. |
