Microsoft support of XP and Vista OS systems that do not have the latest Service Pack will be dropped soon. If you don't have XP SP3, or Vista SP2, get it now so you can continue to get updates from Microsoft.
Also Windows 2000 support is being dropped completely on July 13, 2010.

Jack, just wanting to know if my Dell Dimension 3000 is safe to up-grade to SP3? Windows XP is what came with it but they said it wasn't very stable to install SP3 and I've just been waiting til the coast is clear! Any info would be appreciated. Ray _________________ Ray Qualls

I don't see why not. If you have SP2 and all is working there is nothing in SP3, that I know of, that would "break" it. |

To reiterate what Jack told you, you MUST upgrade your XP computers to Service Pack 3 if you want to continue to receive ANY Windows updates after July 13, 2010 (this summer). Those ignoring this advice will be left unprotected against any new exploits targeting their operating systems and Internet Exploder browsers.
One can order an XP CD from Microsoft for just the postage charge. First, check with your PC's manufacturer (website - support) to see if they have any special drivers that need to be installed prior to installing SP 3 (esp. HP). Apply any driver updates before upgrading your service pack. also, using any backup software available, or via drag and drop copying, save as much data and email as possible to external drives or DVDs. If you have Acronis True Image, burn a complete image of the computer before you upgrade.
Plop the SP 3 CD into the CD tray and start it up. Follow the instructions, let it reboot the machine, and then go to Windows Update via Internet Explorer. You will find dozens of updates awaiting you that were released after SP 3 and require it. Keep checking for updates, applying them, rebooting, until there are no more. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Jack -
Pardon the simplistic question but how can I determine whether or not I have SP2 with Vista? Looked under the list of installed programs and came up empty.
Thanks,
Richard |

Find the link or icon labeled "(My) Computer" - and right click on it, then select Properties. The General tab opens with the operating system and service pack level at the top. Your CPU speed and installed ram are displayed near the bottom. _________________ "Wiz" Feinberg, Moderator SGF Computers Forum

Or, Hold the Windows Key down and press the Pause/Break key. The Window that comes up will have the info. |
