Hi Paul, You might have a hard time tryin to find tab for "Sand" in C6 as most players like to use B11. Billy Wilson is the only person I ever heard play it in C6. Click this link to hear him. Good luck though.

Paul,
When I was in Hawaii & met the best players--notably--Barney Isaacs, we talked at length about the various tunings used for Hawaiian steel. I'd like to point out, when we talked about the great instrumental SAND, it was considered VERY NORMAL to RETUNE to the B11 tuning for SAND. I'd just like to say, in my opinion, you are limiting yourself--depriving yourself from not enjoying the beautiful sound of the B11 tuning!

The definitive version of the instrumental SAND is on the Webley Edwards/Hawaii Calls album "Hawaiian Shores", played by the great Jules Ah See.

Now, when I was there listening & watching Barney play(on the Hawaii Calls shows & the jam sessions at his club)--he demonstrated how the C6 was used predominantly in Hawaiian music. Also, if one listens to the many great Hawaiian albums that have been available--plus, I have many recorded tapes of the Hawaii Calls shows--you can hear mostly the C6 tuning! So, you are on the right track about using C6.

You could probably play SAND on the C6, but the B11 FITS better--it "lends itself" very nicely to the melody of the song.

As for the tab on B11, Basil Henriques had it tabbed out in one issue of Aloha Dream Magazine. It may be on the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Assoc. web site.

Butch,
Thanks for your info. Being a "Newbie" to LS, I am really surprised at all the "Greats" on Pedal and Non Pedal who opt to create yet another "Tuning" to suit their style of playing...Yikes! Is it because it takes a little more work to get that sound or what?

I see quite a bit of Pedal tabs in E9, E13 and even C6. I have recieved some help from Andy S., Bill C. and Doug B. with tabs, but even they are limited as to my request. I do have enough to hold me a while, but when a beautiful song like "Sand" comes down the pike I don't want to tune to another tuning just to play it...maybe I'm lazy too?

In the "steel without pedals" section,
Mr.Cho has listed a tab & video, of Jerry Byrd playing Sand in A9th
low to hi; A C E G B C# E
slight alteration to C6, and sounds great !

Thanks to Mr. Cho

Thanks Rick,
Is that a 7 string? My 8 string C6 is lo to hi ACEGACEG which is really close.

Well,if Erv doesn't have it,maybe we can get Billy Wilson to post the tab as simplified version of it for us.

That is exactly my point...I saw Billy Wilson's You Tube of "Sand" and he looked like he was having fun and it sounded great. Is he the only person in Steelville that can do that? I would love his tab of "Sand" for sure. Erv told me he doesn't do C6 Lap stuff...OK. I've played Electric guitar 40 years...1 tuning...I can get an answer any minute of any day from another guitar player. I love Hawaiian music and Country steel backup...that along with health issues brings me to LP and I'm doing OK with it, but I need some help that is all.

Paul, in my haste to copy this tuning, i've made an error.
The correct tuning should be
low to high
? A C# E G B C# E
The 8th string is not used on the tab, but it's noted "Low A". perhaps he has an octave lower A for string # 8.
Apologies for MY BAD
Rick

Paul,

The writing on the TAB (reportedly in the Master's own handwriting!!!) states: A A C E G B C# E

It is an unsual but lovely and rich arrangement of Sand and a joy to play in this obscure tuning.

My personal C6 favorite for 8 string is ACEGACEG, so I just use strings 8-2 when playing the A9 version of Sand.

Best of luck,

Josh

Thanks Josh,

I don't know why I'm so concerned about learning "Sand", but I am. I'm beginng to think I started down this road too late LOL. I've always love the Hawaiian sound and Country Steel...to actual play it would seal the deal...Paul
