| I think this is a computer issue so I will try a post here. I am using Cubase LE 4 with a Lexicon Alpha interface on a Toshiba laptop with Windows XP. My main problem is that during playback I get random bursts of static and occasionally ( after anywhere from 1-20 minutes of playback ) I loose the alpha asio driver altogether and have to unplug the alpha and re start the whole thing. I have optimized the laptops performance settings according to Lexicon's recommendations and set my buffering level accordingly which helps but does not eliminate the occasional burst of static. Lexicon and Steinberg are about as much help as my cat. Any one have thoughts on this? Any help would be much appreciated! By the way I have updated the driver and Cubase Le 4. |

Gary,
I have Cubase LE4. It came bundled with Lexicon Lambda.
I don't have a laptop [desktop].
The one thing that bugs me about Cubase is I have to go into the VST settings and change over to Lambda ASIO in order to RECORD. Then to hear back what I did [properly], I have to go back into VST and switch Lambda ASIO back to ASIO DirectX Full Duplex Driver.
Maybe that's all you need to do, is switch the drivers.

I'd try a different driver set. Google for "free asio drivers". Check out ASIO4ALL.
Also look for IRQ conflicts.
Many laptops are a wee bit finicky when it comes to audio/recording applications. I would not suspect a Steinburg issue here, but...I've been fooled before.

Thank you both, Chip and Howard, for your responses. Chip its strange that I can only use the asio driver. The direct x driver does not work at all with my alpha.
Howard - the asio4all driver is a good recommendation. Way more adjustably and features. It seems you are correct about the conflict. No matter what usb port configuration I use I still get the static. I tried loading all the files from my external hard drive on to the computer and now it seems to be fine so somehow there is a conflict between the alpha and my external hard drive. I will have to live with the humongous file on my lap top until the recording project is complete or find a work around solution that allows the use of my external hard drive without conflict. Anyway you both helped me to improve my lot today and I thank you. |

Gary,
Try going to Steinberg Cubase LE4/ASIO DirectX Full Duplex Setup and check your playback and record settings. Playback should be set to your PCs soundcard.
It's worth a shot. If you have Steinberg located in your start menu, then 1 click on it will reveal ADxFDS.
FWIW - When I immediately playback a recording without first having made the switch, I get a playback, but it comes through my monitor [amp I was using to record guitar parts]. So seeing how you probably do not have a monitor [with a laptop], I'm assuming the signal wants to play, but is getting sidetracked somewhere, causing the static. (just a guess)

| Chip I am in fact using a monitor. I have playback through the alhpa to a monitor consisting of an old stereo amp and speakers. Its a little more useful than laptop speakers. |

| You have to be careful with the ASIO4ALL drivers. I was using an HT Omega Striker 7.1 sound card and wanted to see what it would do with Sonar (8.5 Pro). The Striker 7.1 did not have ASIO drivers and their tech support suggested I install the ASIO4ALL. That did get the Striker 7.1 recognized in Sonar but it screwed up my regular recording interface (a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 firewire connected unit) and its ASIO drivers. To get it working again I had to uninstall the ASIO4ALL, uninstall the Saffire Pro 40 drivers, reboot the PC, and reinstall the Saffire Pro 40 drivers. |

I had the same problem... and still do if I use my laptop. My processors and memory were not fast, nor robust enough to handle the load. I don't know what the physical specs are on your box, but my 1.6 ghz with 2 GB of ram wasn't enough and couldn't be upgraded. As soon as I put Cubase 5 on my dual quads with 50 GB of ram, it was just fine...
I tried drivers... unloading applications.. everything.. just needed more/better hardware... |
