I've just acquired a Derby D-10 with 8+5 - a terrific guitar, but maybe one 'knee' short for what I need.
It's struck me that my LKR is situated in a place that would allow me to use it while playing the back neck, and that will help maximise the guitar's options. I'm also going to add the 'Isaacs' change to pedal 4 and will be moving things around a bit; I have a number of rods and bell-cranks on order and it'll be my 'project' (not to mention that I also have to switch it to my 'Day' set-up).
I just wondered if anyone else has a C6 pull on their LKR and how it works for them; I think I can reach all but the eighth pedal with ease...

It's hard for me to imagine being able to use the LKR comfortably with the C6th neck. Seems like that would involve quite an awkward leg stretch. (?) I'll be interested to hear if/how that goes. I have, in the past had a couple of D-10s with C6th changes on the LKL (usually Cs to C#) and that worked out quite well for me. |

I'd have thought that LKL would have been more of a stretch than LKR...
I'm going to try it, anyway; I can't face the hassle of getting a knee-lever kit fitted. _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

It's true that it's a longer stretch but, at least to me, a far more natural one. I think I'd find it very uncomfortable trying to twist my leg around the E9th LKR to reach all the C6th pedals. On the other hand, you can leave your feet and legs in their normal C6th position and simply lean a bit with your left knee to engage the LKL. Plus, since I use the Cs to C# largely either on its own or with pedal 6, I never found it too much of a stretch. (And my legs are certainly not very long!) |

I think it depends on how your levers are situated. I know on my Universal 14, I can engage LKR and play all the way across to pedal 8. It's a bit uncomfortable at 8, but doable.
All it takes is a pull train and a bellcrank or 2. You can always undo it if it doesn't work out. Good Luck!
BTW, you can still buy parts from the Derby factory if you decide to add a kit. A KL kit install on, say CLKL wouldn't be too big a hassle. |

I played an 8+5 D10 with C6 changes on both LKL and LKR for quite a while, and it is possible, but I changed to 3 C6 middle knee levers a couple years ago and it is SOOO much better. _________________ Scott Swartz

Roger,
I have a Derby D-10, 8 X 8. I bought it new at the 2005 St. Louis Convention--it originally was 8 X 5, like yours. At the time, I knew I wanted 8 knee levers, & knew about the positioning of the CENTER knee levers(they are basically in the center of the guitar--between the LKR & RKL E9th levers). Charlie Stepp took the guitar back to his shop & added the LKL, LKR, & LKV--in the CENTER position for the C6th, then shipped it to me. This position allows your left leg to be in the best possible area to use the C6th pedals. Now, I had to sit at my Derby to see what you are talking about & yes, it is possible to use the E9th LKR for the C6th. But, I agree with the other guys--it would be somewhat uncomfortable--at least for me, anyway! Good luck! |

Thanks, all, for the replies.
Well, I'm aware of the comfort of centrally-placed knee-levers - my LeGrande 111 is an 8+9 guitar with not only two central C6 knees but a 'vertical' as well (I call it my MKV!).
This Derby is super, and I may very well add more levers if I continue to enjoy it.
Jerry O.: I've already spoken to Bob Calloway and Margit Stepp earlier this week - I have 8 rods and bell-cranks on order (carefully worked out) so as to maximise the 8+5.
I'll add the 'Isaacs' change to P4, I'm switching the existing B-Bb lower (now on LKV) to RKL and I'll raise 1,2 and 7 on LKV... well, I won't bore you with the details, but I needed one for P8 - the guitar has the G on top of C6th now, so lacks the half-tone raise that's nowmal on that pedal.
I'm off to do a 'Patsy' show in VA next month - switching the Derby around will be my 'project' for the days.... _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

Butch:
My plan is to make the most of the guitar as it is now - if I still love it at the end of the Summer (I bet I will!) maybe I'll drop it off in Brooks, KY on my way back home from my ND gig.
Then I can have things just as I want them! _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

I ordered my 9 & 7 with 2 knee lever in the center and the latest Emmons changes. It's very comfortable, (even tho I can hardly play that neck yet).
THere are a couple changes I would like to add to the E neck, but I can't see where I can fit them easily, without a lot of re rodding.
Best of luck Roger |
