hi there, first post on this forum. i recently acquired (after many years of searching) a late 30's national new yorker (although i have been told mine might be 1940!) - single string through pickup, parallelogram fret markers etc. just wanted to check if anyone knows whether the volume pot is originally black or cream/white?
i managed to source a 1930's cream bakelite knob for the selector switch which was missing.
also, can one get original cases anywhere else except ebay ??
one last question: any hints on string guage for open D/E - i use very heavy strings on my chandler rh-2 but would like to be careful...

We'd love to see photos of your New Yorker!
Are you talking about the potentiometer or the volume knob? I have no idea what color the pot would be (usually they're metal), but the knob should look like one of these New Yorkers.
As far as string gauges go, a set of regular electric guitar strings (.013 to .056 treble to bass) works very well for open E tuning.

Hi there,
The original volume knob would have been a round black knob with a small white dot, like the ones to the right on the 4-knob New Yorker in the top pictures in the thread Brad linked to.
Nils – I too am sorry to hear about your stolen New Yorker. Do you have photos and/or the serial number? You should post about the theft of this guitar on various guitar forums – especially European ones like Michael Messer’s forum and the European Steel Guitar Forum. These old New Yorkers are rare here in Europe, maybe it will turn up in some shop and you could get it back? I hope so.

Fred, I gave the serial number to the police!
Other than that, I decided to keep a low profile (as not to alert the thief) and check all the usual places like forums, eBay etc.
By the way, it was a seven-string... |

| thanks for all the responses fellow new yorkers....just got it this morning but will post pics soon, still has the same strings on since the early 70's apparently...again sorry to hear about the 7-string!...thanks fred for the info on the knob. |
