What is the best mic to have installed on my National square neck polychrome tricone ?
I want to run it to my NV112 to play with some effects. Ed |

When miking a dobro I use a DPA 4090. It works wonderfully with acoustic intruments.
If you don't wanna deal with mic stands, it's also available in another version (4099) including a bracket made for clamping it to guitar's side.
Not so cheap but amazing!
You can mount it on the "waist" of your dobro and head the mic towards the cones... |

I'm playing with my bluegrass band since 30 Years on the stage. We are playing all acoustic stringed instruments as you can see by our web site, and we have 10 mics open on the stage since we are all singers too. We have a mixer man to avoid larsen effect on the stage working hardly.
Recently in order to reduce mic numbers we tryed with some electronic pick ups. For my dobro and mandolin I'm using a small mic attached with some tape close the instrument's hole. I don't remember the type (since we had it in the corner for a long time w/o useing it) but is the ones used for brass like Saxophone with clips. It is a mic so the effect is the same of standard mic but you can drive it with lower volume since is mounted close to the sound hole, and keeps all original tone, that for dobro is a MUST. I hope this could help a little bit.

I forgot one thing...with traditional stand mic you should stay in front of it as much as possible...on the other hand, with mic I'm using, I have to play soft touch backup. So my solution is valid but I have to care about pick volume in general.

Lot's of ways to skin this cat.
I use a small, lapel size clip-on condenser mic. I clip it to the cover plate on the treble side. A little experimenting is needed to find the sweet spot. Usually about halfway between the end of the neck and the bridge.
The farther to the bridge... more trebly, farther to the end of the neck is more bassy.
