Passing John Fabian

Post by Lonnie Bennett »

To Ann Fabian and the Fabian and The Carter Steel Guitar family, we are lost for words of this sad news. John is a very inspiring person to be around. Carter Steel Guitar Co. was the first company to take an active interest in the Sacred Steel convention and community, we certainly learned a lot from him. On behalf of Chuck Campbell, Myself and the entire Sacred Steel community we wish to extend our prayers and condolences to Ann and her family.

Very sad news. One of my favorite things about going to the winter NAMM show was getting to hang with John. He always had a smile on his face…he was a great ambassador for the steel guitar. My condolences to Ann, everyone at Carter Guitars and the entire steel guitar community.

Been away from the forum for a while - so I apologize for being so late adding my heartfelt condolences to Ann and to all John's family. I was lucky enough to buy an S-10 (and Nashville 112) before I moved back to the UK in 2006, and all at Carter could not have been more helpful. John's passing is a loss to the whole community as well as his family.

Anne,

I just saw this. I am so sorry for your (our) loss. A few years back while working in Texas, you arranged for me to go to the factory to meet John even thought it was the end of the month and they where very busy. John took me on a tour and took the time to talk to me not rushing to get rid of me. He explained things to me, told some stories and we just chatted for a while. He was an amazing man. We will all miss him very much.

My sincerest condolences to you, your family, your employees and the entire Pedal Steel Guitar community.

For those not living in the Dallas area, John's obituary ran yesterday in the Dallas Morning News. You can also sign the online guest book.

I will miss John very much, he seemsed to be one of the only people that took the SCSGA serioulsy when I started it.

I will always remember the kind words and advice that he gave to me.

Going to NAMM will no longer be the same without him.

I will miss John. We always geeked out whenever we got together (usually about non-steel guitar related stuff).

I'm glad he had so many years to pursue his dream.

I'd like to point out some inaccuracies in my post:

I remember discussing with John how his illness had motivativated his work in advancing the steel. I had assumed that this had motivated his creation of the company in the first place. I have since learned that his illness came well after he entered the steel industry.

In any case, John was aware of the fragility of our existence on the earth, and took that awareness to fuel his creativity and passion.

I'll miss him.
