I wasn't there on this particular night, I ran across this video last night while doing some UTube surfing. Right now from NC it
is a headache to get over the mountain , I-40 is closed due to a rock slide and it takes an extra hour or two to make the trip.

That is the best lesson in slow song backup I am aware of.
That was like a complete example of all the techniques for complementing a slow song on a steel, all rolled into one very tasteful break! He had the knees, the pedals, the slants, the bar shivers, the harmonized scales, the complementary notes moving down as the melody moves up, everything was in there. And all this from a guy who's known for playing fast! It's interesting that a guy with all the knees and pedals, who obviously know how to use them, still understands that sometimes a bar slant just sounds way too cool. And the back up is just as tasteful and impressive. To me this shows just why Paul is on top. I get bored way easier with the fast stuff, as impressive as it is.
Tell me has there ever been a nicer steel break on a slow song than this?
And, it just happened to come in one of my all time favorite tear-jerkers.

We all know Paul is and awesome player but for me the best part about these clips of him at the Station Inn is he looks like he is having fun and a great time!
The emotion in his playing for me comes across 110% when he is having fun! What a gift we have to be able to hear and see it!!!

I heard Paul Franklin back in the late 70's in Reno/Sparks, Nevada with the Mel Tillis band. He was playing amazing stuff then, and he's only gotten better.
Did you notice the audience liked the steel solo so much they started clapping before he was even finished. That's never happened to me!!
He wouldn't be the top dog in N'Ville if he couldn't also handle the slow tunes.

The lighting is fine, remember this is a Bar with lots of neon lights all around and behind, the room is not set up for video shoots, the video camera's are auto adjusting for the bright lights that are in direct sight.
There is not a bad seat in the house and you can see everything and everyone from anywhere you plop down.

Paul has certainly "raised the bar" with this arrangement. With all due respect to all my previous heroes, he simply takes the pedal steel to a new high.
I doubt you will ever hear anything like it on a commercially released song. For some reason, they seem to take all the heart and soul out of a song before it gets radio play. It is great to hear an uncut, unrehearsed, right out of the box performance like this.
I need to get that Franklin pedal!

Look for other songs by The Time Jumpers, with Paul playing steel. Can't see him, but his soulful playing is beautiful; such as, Look At Us, and When I Call Your Name.
It Does not get any better than that !!!!!!!! Boooooooooooooooooootifull. So reminiscent of Haggard and co, with Bonnie Owens.
That solo was just the business.....
Harmonies, soulful singing, back up fills.....jeeez I wish I was there that night.
