Willie Nelson is currently on a new PBS Soundstage TV show. Here's one link: http://www.pbs.org/wttw/soundstage/wnelson/gallery.html . He's doing a lot of bluegrass tunes with fiddle, mandolin, and banjo, but he has a steel player that I don't recognize.

It looks like he's playing a Sho-Bud with no logo. It's an SD-10 but instead of a pad, he has some knobs and switches in the back. Does anyone know who he is?

Thanks Ernie. Smile His guitar was actually a custom Show Pro and not a Sho-Bud. You can see a couple pictures and read about it here: http://showprosteelguitars.com/whospro.html

I like Willie, but, this was one of the lamest performances ever... With all respect to the back-up band. (And there were some top guys there, but, it sounded, somewhat, like they only half went over the material b4hand - I thought the one song about bringing the devil down, bordered on catastrophe.)

Russ's tone was kind of midrangy, undefined, and almost distorted - and one shot showed he was playing thru a Deluxe, and maybe that explains it. As to the guitar itself, it appeared there were 4 old style gibson-like volume knobs in the middle of where the neck pad would be (?)

Beside the fact that they must have used the opry camera crew -- because they, repeatedly, had the camera on the wrong instrumentalist.

Checked out RP's guitar on the Sho-Pro site... it does have a Les Paul built into it, somewhere...

Willie's performance was one of the finest I've ever seen him do. Russ Pahl's distorted tone is purposeful I thought that it was refreshingly different from the same old steel guitar tones that you normally hear. Reminded me of Sneaky Pete. Masterful solo performances by all the musicians, and I especially enjoyed Russ. I hope Willie takes this on tour. I will be the first one in line. Russ's Show Prow was built by Jeff Surratt and is a VERY custom instrument built to Russ Pahl's specs. It has built in effects. I really enjoy DIFFERENT. Russ shows some very creative approaches on that performance with Willie. Bravo Mr. Pahl.

I can see it's a long way from Akron, Ohio, to Amherst, New York....

I believe on another thread not too long ago Russ' response to that question was something like standard Emmons setup but with E to F# change on a knee lever. He also tunes it down 1/2 step open. From what other's have said about Russ, he can play "same" very well and has for a long time but likes to do 'different'.

Bill, I agree about the tone, but noticed most of the instruments were lacking. Duncan's fiddle sounded like only getting sound thru the pickup and not any help from the mic he was playing into. The mando was missing his usual chunkier bottom end, and I thought the banjo and steel were missing tonal qualities as well (and I was watching listening to the PBS HD version). It seems only Willie's guitar, the bass, and drums really were mixed well - besides the vocals...but, I wasn't there live and who knows if it sounded better in the audience.

None-the-less an excellent show put together and I was glad they picked some of whom they did to be present.
