Came across this clip of Albert Lee and Emmylou Harris singing at Wembley, UK in 1984. Gerry Hogan does a nice solo on ZB in a great close up shot.

Ken, great clip. You can hear the ZB tone here. Rings like a bell.

It would be great to have Gerry, Dave and Mark headlining the next John Davis meeting - what a treat that would be. How about it JD?

Albert Lee has no right to be that good on piano and vocals as well as his guitar playing !!!

I agree with James, although it is financially impossible for my wife and me to attend one of
John's meetings, it would be nice for Gerry to
appear at one of the shows, he ain't half bad
on steel, pity he changed that lovely green ZB
D-11/10 (or was it a D-11 ?)for whatever he
plays now,I think the last time I saw him was
at the last Newbury show we attended featuring
the late Tom Brumley.
All the best

Gerry seems to have become the forgotten man of steel in the U.K.
Good to see him get a bit of attention.

It may seem that way, Tony, but, while Gerry is a member of the Forum, he's generally too busy to post here very much. As a player he's holding down one of the more high-profile gigs on the European circuit with Albert Lee and Hogan's Heroes.

As a gentleman, Gerry has always conducted himself with great dignity, and has never been one to promote himself. He's been enormously helpful to up-and-coming players over the years (including offering me some very welcome encouragement in my early years on the instrument).

I think we all owe Gerry, Barbara, and their family a big vote of thanks for their efforts in pioneering the UK Festival of Steel Guitar for all those years - to think that we got the chance to see Buddy, Emmons, Jimmie Crawford, Doug Jernigan, Herby Wallace, Russ Hicks, Herb Remington, Joe Wright, Lloyd Green and many other master players.

As one of the UK's earliest players himself, he's set a very high standard over the years; I'm delighted to say that he's one of my best pals!

Smile

Frank
The reason why most players here in the UK have meandered away from ZB's onto other makes is that modern pedal steels are easier to work on than ZB's were, as well as being lighter and more compact. They did have this great tone that is difficult to replicate on modern guitars. I certainly wish that I'd kept my last ZB. It was a beautiful instrument.

Gerry is actually playing a white D10 JCH these days.

I was very lucky to get to know Gerry, Barbara, and the family Hogan while playing bass for Heather Myles a few years back. It was our good fortune to have him join us on steel for a couple European tours. He adds a wealth of class and true musicianship to any band he plays with. I miss seeing Gerry post here on the forum quite a bit. One of you British chaps please do us "colonials" the great favor of asking Gerry to stop in here and letting us know what he's been up to. Well said, Rick!

Ken:

I do believe that white JCH is Russ Hicks' old one - Gerry now has a pair of them!

I, too, wish I'd kept my ZB. I doubt I'd be playing it on a regular basis for the reasons you mention, but I was silly to get rid of it.

I agree with everything that Roger and Rick have said about Gerry (and Barbara and family). You just won't get anyone more helpful and modest about all he does for steel guitar- a Gentleman through and through.Proud to call him a friend.

I was at Wembley and heard Gerry in -84.
I didn´t get to talk to Gerry but he sounded good. It was the first time I saw a ZB Smile
I played there too - 83 was my first year there - 20 years old and only been playing steel for 3 years.
I did meet a lot of great steel players there - John Hughey, Tommy Detamore, Michael Dourchett (sp?), Harold Fogle, Chubby Howard and more.
great festival!
Gerry has been a good friend for some 20 years now. He always sounds good.

Hallo Ken !
I agree with what you said about ZB's regarding the
prohibitive weight factor thats why I swapped Gordon's Blue D-10 for the SD-10 that Bob Adams
converted from John Roache's D-10 but as you say,
the tone is unlikely to be reproduced on newer
instruments.
Nice to hear Dags input, ain't heard him for some
time, still got your ZB ?
Just saw that clip of Gerry playing his JCH,he is
a great player, never really met him to speak to,my
loss I think !
