Spent the night in Chicago with my wife as a birthday surprise. She bought VIP tickets for Robert Earl Keen at Joe's..
We were just off the (elevated) corner of the stage closest to Marty - what a great player! I learned more about how to play steel guitar within the context of a band last night then ever before. Great tone - out of his Fessy!
As a newbie - I way over play and "pump" my volume pedal way to much.
So - thanks to Marty and the rest of the band for an amazing show last night and for inspiring a player to get better! |

Yeah, Marty is tops. Top dude too. Did he play any C6 with Robert? _________________ Sierra Session U12, Milkman 1/2, Goodrich Omni, Divine Noise Cables, BJS, Solid cosmic gold, baby πΆπ» |

On a Rick Trevino show, Marty was executing clean, smoking C6 single note lines on a 1964 Emmons through a Session 500. His tone was full and robust with body and clarity . . . a pleasure to hear. |

I agree with Jeff....Marty is an excellent player with great tone and stylings on both E9th and C6th necks. But just as impressive is Marty's taste in BBQ; he knows where to find the "good stuff" in the greater Austin area. |

I've been to Iron Works in Austin. Can't say I've ever had better BBQ that that! |

Whereas my friend Marty is in a rarified class of steel player, the Iron Works is just one of many wonderful BBQ places in this area.
Iron Works is excellent, of course, that much is definitely true. I personally favor Artz Rib House, and next time you're in town, you should try that place. And they have live music every night. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? |

Marty and I first met up while he was based here in the Bay Area in the late 1970's.
Besides being a monster C6th player, he is a good soul. Just a great guy.
If you ever have the chance, go hear Marty play. You will love what you hear. |

Little off topic but there's no food section in the forum index.
I'm in Herb's camp. Artz is about my fave BBQ in AustIn.
Herb, let's have a date. I'll buy another of your books. _________________ Sierra Session U12, Milkman 1/2, Goodrich Omni, Divine Noise Cables, BJS, Solid cosmic gold, baby πΆπ» |

That's a great idea, so let's do lunch at Artz's!
Forum
Other reasons to eat at Artz Rib House when you're in Austin:
1) it's a mile north of the Broken Spoke, where you'll undoubtedly wind up one night;
2) owner Art Blondin is a bassist still gigging around town, as well as owning/operating the restaurant;
3) Art as a person is as good as his BBQ. He supports musicians in Austin with gigs and food;
4) the restaurant hosts a monthly meeting of the Central Texas Bluegrass Association;
5) musicians that regularly play at Artz are some of Austin's best players, like Bert Rivera, Howard Kalish, Rick McRae, Redd Volkaert, Billy Curtis, Ray Tesmer, etc. I play there from time to time, usually the first Saturday of the month, with Redd, Jody Meredith and Jerry Lightsey.
The restaurant had some hard times... temporarily, thank God... recently because of some humongous medical bills due to an uninsured illness of Art's wife. The outpouring of community support for the the Blondins and the eatery was astounding! And the quality of the food and the service never dropped.
I consider this diversion of Marty's thread to still be on topic, because Art loves steel guitar, country music, and is a benefactor to the Austin music community, which includes Marty, Gary N., Howard Kalish, Bobby Snell, Nate Delacretaz, Mack Quinney, Ken Metcalf, David Biller, Anthony Locke, Bob Hoffnar, Jim Loessberg, Redd Volkaert, Cindy C., your humble correspondent, and many other Forumites I'm sure I've regretfully omitted. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

Sad to hear of Art's wife's illness and hard times. When I lived in Austin, 15 years or so ago, we played at Art's a lot. On nights when we didn't have a gig, and wanted to go out, we still went to Art's. There was always good music, nice folks, and just thinkin about that sampler platter is making me want some brisket and sausage! |
