Series wiring combines the ohms. Two 8 ohm speakers in series = 16 ohms.

Parallel wiring halves the ohms. Two 8 ohm speakers in parallel = 4 ohms.

The series calculation is correct however, while the parallel calculation in this case is correct where the 2 speakers have identical impedance ratings, the true resultant resistance is calculated by the product of the two resistances divided by the sum of the two resistances (a*b/a+b). For instance if one were to connect an 8 ohm and a 4 ohm speaker together the resultant resistance would not be 6 ohms (8+4)/2 but 2.66 ohms (8*4/8+4). This becomes important when one is attempting to achieve what the amplifier manufacturer recommends- which is usually the minimum load that the amplifier is designed to use (under which can fry the amp). I've made series cables for PA systems that accomplish this w/o having to rewire the speakers themselves.
