Topic: Why no steel guitar events in the Pacific Northwest |

| It seems like there are a lot of players on the forum from Oregon and Washington, but I never hear of any steel guitar events or shows within driving distance of Portland. Anyone know of anything? |

I think the Portland guys throw a steel jam once or twice a year.

PM Larry Behm.
I think they've got something set up for early spring. A couple three of "us" have other stuff going on, and/or out of the area a lot lately.
Maybe Ray Montee is getting something set up with a local dance instructor..
Like I said, I'm sure Larry has something in the works soon.
The last one was REAL well attended, and bordered on something needing more format management and logistics. I think it took a lot of us by surprise. It's nice to have those kinds of problems rather than too little interest.

There are rumblings about another steel jam possibly in April. Keep a look out on Events & Anouncements.
Otherwise, go to Duff's (7th & SE Market) this Saturday night, Feb 13 to hear the Buckles. Harley James is the steeler and there will be twin fiddles, too. I'll be at Spirit Moutain Casino in Grande Ronde Feb 26 & 27 with the Honky Tonk Roadshow. |

Matthew, Larrys jam is fun.
There used to be a steel show in Spokane WA and it was awesome. ONe year Jaydee Maness gave a seminar and performance, the next year Joe Wright. There were a few dealers, some steels on display, a BIAB seminar, a beginners jam, and a couple days of performances...a real steel show.
a few years ago i got a letter from the Northwest Steel Guitar Assosciation (forgive me if I got the name wrong its been a couple years)saying they were disolving the organization due to a lack of membership and then the shows stopped happening.
It would be so great if someone could start this back up again. POrtland would be an ideal location as youve got a buttload of great players there and mighteven draw some from north Cali. Id gladly drive down to POrtland for a steel show. Up to vacnouver, across to Idaho, whatever. . |

There is an upcoming jam in Portland. It will be April 18th 2010 at Bushwacker's in Tualatin OR. The club just south of PDX, by the I-5/I-205 Fwy interchange. It is very accessible w/ good parking and plenty of room. Food and drink will be available through the club for $$. Harley James, Lynn Stafford, Larry Behm, Mark Simpson and I are currently arranging the final details.
It will be somewhat different this year:
[1] Several weeks prior to the jam, will be posting a internet link to the jam set-list including: keys, tempo and progreessions in Nashville notation. Hopefully this will alleviate some of the fear and anxiety of both newbies and old-hands alike.
[2] We're also considering a morning "mechanic's workshop". Interested players can bring their axes. We'll have 4 or 5 steel mechanics available to help troubleshoot/fix guitar problems, as well as, advise and explain DIY modifications (e.g. swap out knee levers etc)....time permitting!

 At the last big jam we sat 31 players and could have sat 40 if they would have brought their gear. The NW is a hot bed of pedal steel, lap steel and Dobro players. I personally have about 4 new players a year come for instruction etc.
I know that because of our big numbers that each player does not get to play all that much, but remember it is still all about the brotherhood and seeing your buddies face to face and checking out their lastest toys.
This is yet another new location for us; it has easy freeway access, a big floor and they want us there, maybe we have found a home.

How about giving each player a 30 minute time slot, then he or she could play their own selected tunes. If enough players showed up it may turn into a 2 day affair.

I gotta agree with Ben - those steel shows were real cool. I really enjoyed them. It's where I met Ben and Larry, and I'm still learning from the JayDee Seminar.
I'm psyched to see there is a new jam in the works. Going to get it on the calendar and see if I can't make it! The last one was fun. |
