New Jagwire Strings From b0b - Hear Them!!!

Post by Greg Cutshaw »

Yesterday it was time for my yearly change of strings so I opened my pack of b0bwires and did the tedious chore of installing them (I hate changing strings). Ok so the clarity is back, the harmonics are now bell clear, the wound strings ring like a piano. The tone is a bit sharper than I like but these are great strings!

The Steel was recorded with a Goodrich 120 pot pedal armed with a Dunlop HopPotz pot and played into a Fender Steel King. The fiddle and guitar parts used an old Fender Vibro Champ. Most of the reverb is Boss RV-5 set on hall. The steel has a touch of the Guyatone MD-3 Micro Digital Delay as well. The drums and fiddle also use my Yamaha AW-2400 reverb. Drums are EZDrummer mixed through Reaper with lots of manual edits (rimshots added and excess bass drum hits removed, custom ending).

What's That, Hook?

ha ha...just kidding...

greg, i feel the same way about changing strings. i changed both necks at once today which really never happens more than once every five years. so that's the pedal steel side of me..
however..
i love the c6th lap tuning licks on your site ( i don't really have any lap experience) and wish i had them all in a book (a cheap book). many of the clips have great tone more like a pedal steel..what setup are you using on those?

Chris,

The tuning is here:

http://www.gregcutshaw.com/Tab/LapTab.html :D same page as the tab. I vary between a low C and a low C# and do bend a few strings. Oh the setup?...

Rondo Lap steel -> 4' George L's cord -> Goodrich pot pedal -> 1' George L's cord -> Boss RV-5 -> 8' George L's cord -> Fender Steel King -> Shure SM-57 mic -> Yamaha MG10/2 mixer -> Yamaha AW-2400 workstation. Only exception is Kansas City Blues which used the Hilton pedal.

I did a few books for people that didn't have the ability to print. It was a lot of work to print, bind, pack to ship and mail.

Just print all the tab files and bind them into a comb binder and they will stay put for a long time. I usually laminate the cover and back page to make it more durable. I could pry dump all the tab into one pdf file to simplify printing.

Greg, I'm curious about P4 on your E9. Is this what some call the Franklin pedal? Do you use P4 along with a knee lever? Did you use this change anywhere on the tune you attached to this post?

John, I didn't use P4 in this song and also just added the G# to B change (very cool). I was going to tab out a bunch of the uses I've found for these but got involved in other pursuits. I've used P4 in a few other songs but doggoned if I don't know which ones any more. Experimenting with the copedants is more fun than actually playing. Can't have too many pedals if you're an experimenter!

That was so nice, if I could play like that I would change strings everyday. :D

Thanks Jim, but it's mostly in the Jagwire strings I think :whoa: . As much as I hate changing them, and the expense (too many hobbies) it's nice to document what really clear tones sound like. They're stainless so I expect the wound ones to sound good a while yet.

Greg, buddy, you know I love you...but a very active pro player like you changing strings after a year ?

I suspect any brand of string would have brought back the snap, crackle and pop after a year !

No diss on Jagwire, I am sure they are great. When I change strings ( very often) the snap crackle and pop never went away.

Sorry, I had to say it...you knew I would I think...

I'll second that. Greg is a tasty player of steel and lead guitar, and always records his offerings to a very high standard. Tabbing out his stuff and making it available to the masses (as he does very often) is very generous.

Hi Greg,

How do you set up your FSK for recording? Do you use the direct out, mic the amp, or both? If direct, do you use pre/post in or out?

John, I always use a mic only, Shure SM-57. It's perpendicular to the face of the amp, about 4" from the grill cloth and varies from right in the middle of the silver cone to on the edge of the silver cone. The more I try other mics, the more I like the Shure as it doesn't distort with loud sounds and doesn't pick up much off axis or background noise. I play the steel loud enough to drown out the amp's, pickups etc hum to keep the S/N ratio high.

This song used 19 tracks so I don't use much stereo steel sounds as they eat up too many channels.

Greg was this a test of the longevity of a set of Jagwires -- or do you really only change your strings once a year ?? :whoa:

Paddy, seriously, I don't change my E9th strings more often than once a year. I just put this set I got from B0B on the steel and ordered another for next year. The C6 strings go even longer. For one thing I mostly play only in the winter when there's not a lot of other things to do up here. And changing them just takes time from my other hobbies.

Ok Greg I understand ... I thought you played out a lot more so I was surprised that you didn't change your strings.
