Hi, my name is Gene Warner. I was born in Vermont, but have made my home in San Antonio, Texas for many years now. I have finally joined the SGF, though I have been a lurker for some time. I have been a full-time stringed instrument repairman for 40 years. I play guitar, banjo, mandolin, bass, dobro, and steel guitar, to varying degrees. I played a Fender stringmaster triple 8, in a vintage style country and western swing band, in the early 80's, just well enough to lend the proper feel to the music. I took lessons for a while from Denny Mathis, a legend here in the San Antonio area, to get me oriented enough to be able to fake my way though it. Without his help, and the patience of my band-mates I would never have been able to do it. I sold my steel when the band eventually went the way of all bands, and only occasionally noodled around on other slide instruments for many years. Now at a very late age, I have decided to try to play some steel again. After getting over the "sticker shock" of prices on vintage steels (or even decent new ones), I am the proud owner of a nice 1956 Fender Stringmaster double 8. I don't think I could carry a triple neck around anymore, as it's similar to toting a barn door! Being a repairman, I'm busy checking everything out, and trying to find the proper gauges for the high C6th and a D13th that I plan to use for now. I will be looking for info from the members here as I work the rust off. I will also post anything of interest I come up with, as I go along.

Gene,

Welcome to the forums and back to the world of steel.

As for looking at string gauges, I just posted in another post which shares the title of yours:

....but just in case, here's the link to the forum section where you can not only buy strings, but also compare tunings and gauges:
