Topic: Emmons tuners? Sprezel? |

Hello Emmons lovers, I recently purchased a 12 string .. I already have one
that needs an overhall but that is not what I am asking about. The one I just got
has Sprezel tuners .. is that common on Emmons? These are way to stiff. I've never seen a set of tuners that were this bad. I am going to have to ether fix these or replace them. What advise may you reveal as to which tuner would be best or how to get these running? I've got to get this steel running top notch so
I can start to rebuild the other one .. thanks for the help. |

| Try loosening the adjustment screws on top of the keys first. Sperzels are designed to have zero backlash and don't really need those screws to be tight. |

Loosening the screws has no effect .. still super hard to turn these buggers.
Its like someone stuck glue in em' Could try bathing them in a bath of
heated Lub .. maybe some will get into the gears trough the string post.

Fwiw, I had gotten an
old SuperPro a while
back that had sat idle
for years 'under the bed'.
Prolly two thirds of it's
Sperzels were near frozen.
I called Bob Sperzel, at the
factory, and he had got them
back to 'like new' condition
quickly, and for very little
expense. He's at 216-281-6868

The Emmons Co. put Sperzel tuners on their guitars starting in the very early 80's. My '82 PP and my '90 Lashley LeGrande both have these tuners.
The '82 sat unplayed for about 16 years when I wasn't in possession of it and the tuners were hard to turn when I regained ownership, but using them loosened them up considerably. I'd gently turn them with a string crank repeatedly (with strings off the guitar, of course  ) until their action becomes softer. They are still going to be somewhat tighter than a Kluson Deluxe, however; it's part of the design of the machine.
I'm not aware of what tuning machines Emmons is using on their current guitars, but I do like the Sperzel. Use Russ' contact number if some constant use doesn't remedy the situation.

I started to put Sperzels on my
Emmons years ago and backed out
because the hole in the keyhead
was just a little to tight for
the Sperzel keys and I was afraid
they might not turn properly.
Could this be your problem?

They were installed at by Emmons so its just the grease has solidified as was
pointed out. I think I will try to take one apart and see how that goes. Not sure
how that is accomplished maybe knock on the string shaft .. anyone know? |

Scott -- I had a Dekley with Sperzel tuners. I hadn't used it for a while and the tuners all locked up. If I remember correctly, I think I unscrewed the buttons, took them off, and added a lot of lubricant. I put the buttons back on and slowly moved them back and forth. Eventually, they started moving just fine. One caution -- I did strip out one of tuner buttons which engages the shaft. Many years later I went to the Sperzel website and was able to order a new button and it worked just fine.

The Sperzels on my BMI S-12 were kinda stiff so I just took my Electric Screwdriver with the attachent for winding strings and just put it on each key and ran them both forward and backward about fifteen to twenty times and now there's no problem at all....JH in Va.
