OnLine Memorial Service for John Fabian (CarterSteelGuitars)
John Ogden Fabian was Born November 21 1945 and Passed January 17 2010. A very special loving soul, his presence will be missed by many.
John always seemed to know just the way to ask the question or phrase his comments so as to spark intrigue and resolution in his conversations with others. John loved nature in all its splendor (especially tropical fish, birds, and wildcats). He enjoyed solving complex mysteries and puzzles.
John's kindness and gift of teaching with wit and humor allowed many people clear access to his knowledge and his ideas. He delighted in learning new things and never stopped looking for ways to improve his products or make life easier or more pleasant for someone else or innovating until the day he passed.
As a pedal steel guitar enthusiast, psg educator, Jeff Newman, was John's mentor and psg great, Buddy Emmons, was John's inspiration.
As Founder and President of the largest pedal steel guitar company in recent history, World Class Steels, Inc. dba Carter Steel Guitars, John endeavored to bring and maintain the highest level of integrity, honesty, education, and support in the industry. He was the designer and creator of many of that Company's innovations, including various educational seminars and presentations (both live and virtual online), the selling of very high-priced items (pedal steel guitars) via the Internet direct to the consumer (sight unseen) when virtually no one was yet doing so (1996), early adopter of interactive internet displays such as 3-D and configurators to more explicitly give his customers a real feel for the product, interactive trade-show booths for a hands-on intro (1992), design of the Carter-Starter beginner pedal steel guitar which changed the lives of many wanna-be pedal steel guitarists so that they could easily afford to learn to play (2000), design of the Magnum pedal steel guitar, and even co-designing several aspects of the Carter pro model with his partner Bud Carter. In the last few years of his life, John worked very hard to have Bud Carter inducted into the International Steel Guitar Hall of Fame, which happened in September of 2009.
Service to others was of utmost importance to John, even throughout his 8-year heroic, valiant, and periodically-very-successful battle with Stage 3 and then Stage 4 Metastatic Colon Cancer.
The one piece of advice he would have for anyone age 50 or under: "Have a colonoscopy at 50 years of age or earlier if you suspect you need it."
He is survived by his wife Ann, his sister Barbara, his mother Jane, many cousins, nieces, and nephew.
Cremation was John's choice. A memorial service is in the early planning stages at this time.
Condolences may be sent to psgbuilder@steelguitar.com or to The Family of John Fabian, PO Box 851324 Mesquite TX 75185-1324 USA. Donations may be sent to www.GildasClub.org , www.pricepottenger.com , or Scripps Institute of Oceanography www.aquarium.ucsd.edu .

I am in shock and have a pit in my stomach.
I first met John at Carl Dixon’s show in 1997 I guess. I’ve played Carter guitars since that time. A highlight of the Dallas show has always been time spent hanging out in the Carter room picking with Phelps and talking with John about the steel business.
I think John’s greatest contributions to the steel guitar world were due to the Marketing and Product Management skills he brought from the disk drive business. While many others build high quality instruments, John’s use of his business skills- channels, distribution, promotion and value engineering concepts were unique among today’s builders. This enabled the masses to have access to a quality instrument at an attractive price. This is his legacy.
Not being a “steel mechanic” but having a Product and Marketing background, I always enjoyed getting into John’s head on this part of the business whenever we talked.
I have been a Type 2 diabetic for several years and John always asked how I was and counseled me on eating right to help stay healthy. I didn’t know he was battling cancer at the same time.
I was really looking forward to hanging out in the Carter room in Dallas next month. Life is too short, I wish I had spoken to John more often.
Our deepest sympathy to you Ann and the rest of the family.

I am in total shock!
John and I were very close, and we'd call each other just to chat and discuss steel guitar, politics, health, marketing, and anything in general.
I will miss my dear friend greatly. Steel guitar shows will not be the same for me, which sadly, has happened every time I lose another compadre.

I'm shocked and saddened over the loss of this good friend. There was nobody like him. I'll miss him.

Wow I sure didn't know anything about Johns illness. I've played Carter steel guitars for around 7 or 8 years now and John was always very helpful making sure I got just what I was looking for in parts or whatever I needed. I would've never guess he was older than me because he looked so young and vibrant. I'll be sending my condolences to Ann and everyone at Carter.

I am so sorry to hear of this. John always treated me as though I were an important customer. About 1995, when Carter was a younger company, I was looking around for a new steel, and out of the blue, I received a call from John Fabian. We had never met, and I don't even know how he knew I was in the market for a new guitar (the internet was not what it is today). We chatted for quite a while, and at no point did he ever try to do a hard sell on the Carter, mostly we just talked about steel guitars and music. I must say, that kind of personal attention was what sold me on the Carter.
His passing is a great loss to the steel guitar community. Deepest condolences and best wishes to you, Ann.

I am so sorry.
Ann, I just now saw the news on the Forum and read it in shock and sorrow. I am so sorry. Words escape me. John was always so kind to me and I will hang onto the Carter guitar that I have and will now have a greater appreciation for it. I did a session with it just last evening and it performed wonderfully and the recorded tone was great. Again, my sincere condolences.

This news hurts me very deeply. I am one very proud Carter steel guitar owner. Like so many I had no inkling of John's condition so the news strikes as hard as a thunderbolt. I'll be trying to get a little extra emotion out of my steel now, playing some of the notes "just for John".
Words just feel so inadequate right now...

The steel guitar is a hard mistress. She will obsess you, bemuse and bewitch you. She will dash your hopes on what seems to be whim, only to tease you into renewing the relationship once more so she can do it to you all over again...and yet, if you somehow manage to touch her in that certain magic way, she will yield up a sound which has so much soul, raw emotion and heartfelt depth to it that she will pierce you to the very core of your being.

Who Knew?! I can't believe I won't ever again get to hang out with one of the most intelligent and down to earth guys in the steel guitar community. I really connected with John and this really takes the wind out of my sails.
Ann - I am so sorry to hear this. I pray for your comfort during this time.

Re: OnLine Memorial Service for John Fabian (CarterSteelGuit
This has come as a shock today reading it on the forum. John was a very helpful person, and I recall many phone conversations with him way back to 15 years ago, long before I got a Carter guitar.
May he R.I.P.
God Bless.
