Want to individually thank Hal Higgins for all the help he graciously gives to us here in Gulfport at our DSSGA sessions bi-monthly. His steel playing is as good as any, anywhere. His piano talents only take a back seat to those of Roy Rosetta-and that is a huge compliment to Hal. (Please take it that way, Hal). And his voice takes a back seat to no one. During the final steel line up that always ends our program, Hal stood up, grabbed the microphone and sang two numbers that made everyone quit talking and start really listening-"Look At Us" and then the finale'--
"How Great Thou Art". It was a special treat for me to have Buck Grantham and Joe Wright in this line up to hear them play those great songs with all their original flavor. We had to "kick off" "Look At Us" twice so all could hear the magnificent Buck and Joe start that song off properly. Thanks so much Hal Higgins for you, your friendship and the talent you possess and so graciously share.

Bravo to Hal. I am so grateful for his three beautiful vocals on my CD, From This Moment On, You'll Never Walk Alone, and his inspired rendition of The Lord's Prayer.

In my BIG Personal Book of Favorites and mentors, HAl Higgins Stands out front. As For me Hal desrves a whole lot more attention than that is noticed. His accomplishment on the steel guitar comes behind none. Thanks my friend for your encouragement and Many Talents.

Watching Hal play with the John Penny Band with Rocky Stone and Tina Welch back in Somerville, MA in the mid 70's is what inspired me to play steel guitar!
What a smooth, talented player!

Bill.....thank-you so much for your compliments.....I'm thankful for the talents that the Lord has given me, and that I'm able to use them to bless others. I enjoy playing and singing, and especially for our association. As co-founder of the DSSGA, I consider it something wonderful to be able to lend my talents and assistance in that way. I find it uplifting when I can see and hear those great steel guitarists, such as yourself (Bill) and Joe Wright (awesome) and Buck Grantham (another great player and person) wow the crowds with their playing. And how about Mike Brewer, tremendously gifted for sure! Roy Ayers...what an honor it was for me to have been a part of your CD project. You, sir, have been an inspiration to countless steelers through the years, and for me to have been a small, insignificant part of your project, well, words really do fail me at this moment. RJ....words are not sufficient enough to tell you what your friendship means to me....I'm thankful that I have been able to help you in a small way to expand on your musical abilities....you truly are a great guitarist and someday will be an even better steel guitarist than you already are. Tony.....Had no idea you had taken up playing the steel because of what you heard back in the 70's when I was with John, Rocky (may he RIP) and Tina Welch (now Curless)....man, those were the days. Charlie.....you da man...dude....someday I'm gonna get up to your neck of the woods when you're having a show up there.....please keep me posted....'cause I would love to come and hear what you guys are doing with the steel guitar up there......Bill (again) you referred to Roy Rosetta, who, in my estimation, is one fine piano man....I'm not even close to that man's ability when it comes to playing a piano, but I have learned a few things from him, and I think it's because he gave me one of his brand new keyboards back a few years ago, and he must have left some notes on it for me to play (LOL). Love you guys, and I love the DSSGA. Thanks again.....and let's keep playing and singing together for years to come.......HAL

Hal has a heck of an attitude. He lives on a strip of land out in the gulf. When every one says they live at the end of the world, he says he lives at the beginning. I like that. Great player and singer too.

I have to say that I agree, Hal Higgins has such a great tone, he is truly one of the greats. The Gulfport show was great. I never get tired of hearing Hal Higgins, Mr. Bill Stafford (one of the smoothest), RJ Buras, Buck Grantham, and Mr. Mike Brewer. All great players. Hats off to Mr. Bill Stafford for all his work in the association. Thanks also to Hal Higgins for always putting on a great show. I am looking forward to the next one. |
