All in all, I can't say I'm shocked at the selling price, even though in a little rough shape. While I'm sure there are a handful out there, I don't think I've ever seen another 8 stringer.

The two bidders were likely collectors, and not players. Paying four times the normal price for two more strings seems strange when ya think about it.  |

Doug, that's what I told Susie. Had that second-place bidder not participated, it would have gone for $1,050. It's all rather relative on what something is worth. As someone put it recently on the forum, they paid a higher-than-market price for a guitar they really wanted -- and it was worth it to him. Who knows? Maybe the 8-string 150's will come out by the dozens now, but I still can't remember seeing another one. Supposedly 2,700 (is that right?) fry pans were made. I wonder if even 100 8-string 150's were produced? Anything is worth to you what you're willing to pay...when you try to resell it, though, it'll only be worth what it sells for, not what you think...unless someone agrees with you!

is it a custom model or is it really a Roy Smeck Special ?
perhaps it was repainted & RSS added on ?

No, it's a legitimate Roy Smeck Special Gibson EH-150 eight string guitar. That should go for a lot of money, given its rarity and condition.
There's a six string version of this same model pictured in A.R. Duchossoir's book "Gibson Electric Steel Guitars". Eight string EH-150s are rare enough, but a Roy Smeck Special is even rarer.

| CROWBEAR...I agree. That white ROY SMECK is the real McCoy, not a re-paint. There are photos floating around showing Roy playing a white 6 string Gibson. That 8 string is rather rare and sure looks to be in great condition! |
