I was in the middle of working on a song when the 3rd string let go. It whipped up and gave me a pretty good cut on my right pinky. I have got to learn and duck! Has anyone else been injured by a breaking string?

Jaclyn,
Yep! I've been whipped and cut by a breaking 3rd string more than once in my 34 years of steel playing. It happens. Change your 3rd string often, and it is less apt to break.
I enjoyed your recent post of City Lights. You're learning fast. Have fun!

Back in the early 70s I was watching a buddy try out his new Sho-Bud when his third string broke, wrapped around his hand, and embedded itself into his thumb nail. I had to use some needle nose pliers to pull it out.

Jaclyn,My first pedal steel guitar was a Sho-Bud Maverick that didn't have a roller nut,I would break at least three -5 G#'s every day and it wasn't pretty blood shed and pain,I hardly ever break one these days better guitar ,better strings.I still jump when one of those strings breaks. Whoa! Whoa!

I haven't broken a string since switching to Jagwire strings. Used to break them all the time. Larry B.

They can be nasty when they fly by your nose. Perhaps safety glasses are in order. Don't tell OSHA or we'll all be wearin' face shields.

In the 80's I was tuning up getting ready to play our first set and the third one snapped and at the same time the bass player was bending over to adjust something on the floor and that string popped him right on his right temple! You shoulda seen the look on that guys face, it was pricelss!

String breakage is nonexistent on my Williams 600 series. I was afraid to say that until I had it for two years but after two years and no breakage I think I can start talking. I finally got over my fear of using the C pedal..the 4th string E to F# rise use to break pretty often on my other steels, no such trouble on my Willy. Check out the changer design on the Williams.

The second day into Sho~Bud ownership, I was tuning on stage before a show. I didn't realize that I was hitting the end of the B pedal's throw, and was getting some serious tension happening. I leaned in for a look while tightening, and wham! I got a deep cut on the bridge of my nose, right between my eyes! Dripped blood right on the dustcatcher...

Ok here's the worst one I've had happen.
Playing a song with the band and here comes the steel solo and there goes the 3rd string POP and it goes right through the finger nail into the meat of the finger. I had to take a pair of pliers and pull it out.
Makes slapping the hand feel like nothing after having that happen.

Yeah, don't let the gummint hear about this - playing in a welder's apron, motorcycle helmet & chainmail gloves tends to reduce your touch sensitivity. Might be a interesting stage look, tho.... Mr. Green

These threads always make me feel like I'm living on borrowed time. In roughly twenty years I've broken a lot of strings but I've yet to be injured in any way. Surprised, yes. Sometimes stung slightly but even the .012s have never broken the skin. As for the wound strings, they always seem to snap and stay in place, held from flying around by the winding. My thirds rarely break anymore since I started using the Jagwire .011.5s.

The funniest thing I had once was when my string broke and hit my brother who was singing and playing bass and sort of shocked him !!!

The Jagwire 3rd's have never broken on my old Emmons, but the 5th (.018) strings do.
They last alot longer than other brand 5th strings, but they eventually snap!!!

I was on stage with Steve Piticco. He stood on the left of me. My 0.11 did hurt him real bad. It took him out of his 33 notes p/s solo Smile
Was it Big E putting a towel on his guitar while tuning up a new G#?

I was playing a party at the old Driskill Hotel, Austin, years ago. Old wiring. The lead player played a Gretsch Anniversary with the Bigsby tailpiece. There was an arc from his mike to a tuning peg, and from the tailpiece to my third string. Third string completely vaporized, from tuner to bridge. Gone. Shocked

And yes, I have had the "blood on the steel" situation. But I haven't broken a string in years. Keeping the roller nuts clean really helps. Cool

I have had the .018 gauge 5th string break and knock a chunk out of me big enough to clog a drain!
