This Sunday afternoon Bobby Black will be performing with other bay area western swing musicians at the Sacramento Western Swing Society's monthly dance. Bobby's band will play from 1:00-3:00, followed by the great house band, The Dry Creek Band (featuring Sacramento great steeler Hubert "Brownie" Brown on his unnique S-10 D9th/G6th universal Showbud!).

The dance will be held in the Machinist's Hall, located at Sunrise Blvd. and Citrus Ave., 3 blocks south of U.S. 50, in Rancho Cordova (just east of Sacramento).

Dave: Bummer about the weather. It was sleeting when I got back to Placerville about 5pm. Maybe we'll connect in January or February.

It was great to hear Bobby Black in person and meet him. The man is such a melodic player, and a super friendly down to earth person. I also heard Brownie for the first time. I had met him before but I hadn't really had a chance to hear him play. He is an excellent player with a great style.

Also had the pleasure to meet Chris Ivey, Jay from Coloma, Jay Riley and Pete Grant. It seems the Sacramento region has a good collection of pickers. Maybe we should all get together sometime and swap licks and lies.

yeah..it was cool to meet paul and listen to jay riley's lies and see pete and bobby and my buddy (and ride) jay fagarlie.

bobby played as well or better than i have ever heard him. melodic as paul says, with an advanced and sophisticated manner that makes me wish i could play one tenth as well. he played mostly c6 on his d10 carter...which i was glad to see for my sake, though he does many non-pedal gigs these days also.

there was one moment after bobby was through that made him (and me and others) turn around, smile and laugh as brownie floored it with some strong blues licks that were too cool to be ignored!

dave..we all missed seeing you and your lapdancer!

I thought it was interesting that, when Bobby got irritated with one or two of his pedals being out of tune on his C neck, he went right to his E neck and you almost couldn't tell he changed necks if you weren't watching, his approach was so seamless. What a lucky guy I was in the 60s to have him as a shining example of a pedal steel player and a gentleman. And he was happy to share what he knew.

Bobby is, as we speak, mixing a new instrumental album that is done partly or mostly on a bakelite Rick that I sold him in the early 70s. Can hardly wait! He took that axe to some gig we did with the Cowtown band. I was playing my D-10 ZB and he was on 6 strings of C6. Scared me silly with what he could do. I kept thinking to myself "Hey, I've got more strings and I've got pedals and knee levers. No fair!"

I've seen him do the exact opposite when he busted the B string on his E9. Flipped the pickup selector and finished the song on C6. The guy is a complete PRO!

Yeah, Dave, I've seen Bobby do the same thing.

Yes, Nick, Brownie rocks! He has the touch. Great phrasing and dynamics. Plays well with others.

I played one gig with Bobby (me on Strat) and he broke a string on his E9 neck near the end of the night. I was amazed at how he could get E9 country sounds from his C6 neck. Lots of people get 6th sounds from E9, but the other way around?

Hi everyone...my apoligies for not making the WSS gig last Sunday....
Oh boy... did we get hit by this storm.....

Patty and I left for the WSS early, but by the time we were down to Placerville it started snowing, so we turned back.....

Well, it kept snowing, and snowing and snowing... then our canyon fell to 19 degrees for 3 days... completely freezing the 18" of snow... no power until Thursday... and no water until our pump thawed out on Friday! I've lived here for 36 years... and this was the worst storm I've ever seen!

So glad so many of my steeler friends did make it... Bobby is the ultimate in what we all should strive toward in musicianship and just being a great person!!... as is my other bud "Brownie"... so glad he is finally getting heard by other steelers... he was an inspiration to me in the early '70s... and only more so now!!!

I'm just getting caught up with my email... but sounds like my band the Stardust Cowboys will be at the Jan monthly WSS dance.. same place... same time, on 1/3/10... so if you still want more steel... pleae do stop on by... "Brownie" will also be sharing the bill so looks like another great Sunday of Western Swing steeling!

We missed you, Dave. Sorry you missed such a great show. Bobby and Brownie were something to write home about. I'll see you in January. Looking forward to seeing you and Brownie. Also looking forward to seeing your lap steel. I've been thinking about knee levers ever since I saw the Harmolin years ago. I need them on my dobro, since the Ped-a-bro sounds so incredibly puny in an acoustic setting, not that I wouldn't buy one if I could.
