Hi,
I've got an old Ricky bakelite with scratchy pots... spinning the volume knob, there are portions of the dial that will completely cut out.
I was thinking of getting some cleaner to spray into the pot, such as DeoxitD5...
Would that help?
That said, I don't really see how I'd squirt it inside the pots -- they're not split post pots...
am i missing something?
thanks! |

James,
To do it right you need to gain access to the pot itself and spray through an opening in the pot's case. DeOxix D5 is the stuff to use hands down.
See my post in this thread:

Stewart McDonald does make a pot shaft adapter if you want to try it from the outside. It works good somtimes, sucks others.
I hope they clean up for you,

Cool -- thanks (and apt timing on your other post!)
I can remove the coverplate and get at the inside of the electronics... i guess what i was confused about is that it seems the actual pot itself is sealed. i guess i'll take it apart and take a better look!
Would deoxit have any ill-effects? ie., are there any components it shouldn't touch, or can you apply too much, etc? |

Some of those old pots are sealed so it might be a bigger job. All you need is a little hole/crack to spray in and you're good to go.
I keep DeOxit away from paint. Other than that it is safe on plastics so you should be ok with a Bakelite guitar.
Yeah timing is everything. Glad I didn't have to type that again! (hehehe)
