I already wrote about this in the G6 thread but I think a separate one is in order since no one responded:
The basic G6 (or C6 etc) which has a sixth on the bottom string is only half step away from G13, with a seventh on the bottom.
Has anyone used a Hipshot Extender tuning key to achieve this ?
I`ve been thinking of getting one for my 8 string McKenna.

Hey Olli, those extender keys that Hipshot makes are wonderful! I have them on 4 electric guitars at the moment and have used them on lapsteels also. I wouldn't buy them from HipShot though, they sell higher than a lot of their vendors. In the Stewart/McDonald catalog or website you can get them almost $25 cheaper...........JH in Va.

| They don't work too good on dobros. The gadget itself works perfectly and the preset notes are perfectly intune with each other but when the gadget is activated,the neck tension is disturbed and all the other strings open tuning is thrown off by an unacceptable degree. If I had an 8 string dobro I'd just find a nice open tuning like G11 which contains the core dobro G tuning plus an E and a C and live with it. I'd rather be in tune. |

I use a Hipshot xtender on the 6th string of a Tele. Drops the E to D. I don't think you'd have any major detuning problems using it on just one string for a half or whole step change. I've never tried them on a spider cone, so really can't say.
If your McKenna has a solid headstock with 10mm screw on bushings, it shouldn't be much trouble to install one on your 8th string for trial. Non-invasive too except it has one small screw on the back of the Hipshot plate.
Another alternative, depending on your guitar configuration, would be Tim Wallis' String Drop. A separate device that you can install with your existing tuner[s]. http://www.timarastringbenders.com/product_p/sdrop.htm |

One of my Dobros is kept in a G6th tuning (B D E G B D low to high) It's a solid headstock instrument and for a long time I kept a pair of Keith/Scruggs banjo de-tuners on it so I could go from D to E on the first string and from G to G# on the third string. That way I could have either the G6th or the E7th tuning with a flick (or two) of the wrist....JH in Va.
