I used to live near Black Mountain some years ago and Linn Netherton was one of the top steel players in the area. Also check out in Cruso just off the Parkway with Hoyt Mason at the Hoot'n'Holler Campground and he would be able to provide additional names. IMO the guy you would really want to hook up with for lessons in your area is Joe Turner from Starr SC. It's not a very long drive on I-26. Clyde Mattocks is a fine instructor and has been responsible for getting a lot of people involved with pedal steel. But mileage to his place may be a factor for you if y'all live in Asheville as he's out near Wilson. When I lived over in Broad River Township off of Rt.9, there weren't very many of us in WNC. Lee McKinney used to live up near Boone back then...c. 1994. He played the finest-sounding Emmons p/p I've ever heard.
Hoyt knows all the musicians in the area and used to host jams out at his place quite often. That'd be a good place to start. His campground is listed in the book. I sure do miss those mountains!!!

Lynn Netherton is the steel player with the "Can't Hardly Playboys" band out of Burnsville N.C and is a monster player. I believe he does teach. He is also a steel guitar mechanical genius. He plays an amazing D-10 guitar he designed and built. He is also a nice guy and one of the most interesting people you'll ever meet.

Craig - You can also email Clyde Mattocks off of the Forum and find out from him when and where the MASGA jams are going to be held in the future....the Mid-Atlantic Steel Guitar Association. I was a member when I lived down there and the jams are great. They used to sort of go in rotation on locations...everywhere from eastern TN to southern VA and down to Fayetteville NC. I believe they had one some time back in the Charlotte (NC)area. Great places to meet fellow area steel players and skill level is never an issue and never has been. The more skilled players take time to help out the "beginners". The late Leonard Stadler was a huge supporter of these jams, but sadly he's no longer with us.
About 2-1/2 hours south of you is Saluda SC where the Southern Steel Guitar Convention is usually held about four times a year....another great place to rub elbows with some "locals" and meet a few of the "big guns" in steel guitar. They used to have a mailing list which is now most likely an emailing list...well worth checking into. The Saluda Show started out as a local one-day jam and escalated to a two-day, no-holds-barred event.
