Jimbeaux, I love what you're doing here, but so far you haven't really given us a true test of what we're made of! How about a real "stretch" goal? 40% by December 2nd?

That would be lovely, of course, though I think it's usually more motivating for people to have interim goals that they meet more frequently rather than one far-away goal that they don't meet for a long time.

I also think this may be a case of 'slow and steady wins the race'. For now, we're at 32.244% and they're at 29.430% I think a good interim target for today is 33%. By the time we do that, I think they will have dropped to 29% and we'll be a good 4 percentage points ahead of them and they'd need about 4,000 votes to catch up.

Let's do that and meet back here to discuss it. ;)

Voted today and it raises Mike & T by .001 and pheed lowers by .001.

Just keep voting until they shut this contest down and show them Steel Power.

Yes, that's why we only need, say, about 250 votes to bridge a 500 vote gap: as we come up they come down. But I haven't noticed that it's always one-to-one as you described. And it shouldn't be, really, because for every one vote we get, every one of the other bands, not just Pheed, loses a fraction of a vote to compensate for it (though the largest part is forfeited by Pheed as being the #2 band). Often it looks like our new vote is coming just from Pheed but that's probably just due to rounding-off. Even the smaller guys have to come down fractionally to make room for our new, whole, vote. Make sense?

And, checking right now, we are about to take a 3-percentage-point lead over Pheed. I'd say we're kickin' some serious butt with STEEL-TOED COWBOY BOOTS! :) :) Way to go, Peeps!

Yeah, and they'd better not call it a 'steel-pedal keyboard' or we're comin' after them next! I tell you, you DO NOT MESS with the AWESOME POWER of the STEEL GUITAR COMMUNITY!

At this point, since everyone else is far behind, the issue is the difference between the number of incremental votes cast for Pheed and M+T. Since both M+T and Pheed are around 1/3 each, when M+T go up approximately 0.001% due to a vote directly cast for them, Pheed only goes down about 1/3 of that, or approximately 3 votes to send them down 0.001%. Of course, the process is reverse every time someone votes for Pheed.

Of course, this whole process is not exactly linear. Vote percentage changes do not lead to linearly proportional percent changes unless either 1) the starting percentage is small or 2) the number of votes is large enough that one vote doesn't make a significant change in percentage. Of course, as the total number of votes grows, it takes more and more votes cast for a single vote to give a certain percentage change.

These contests may seem hokey, but I think winning them can sometimes make it easier to book a band - especially for things like weddings and other lucrative private/corporate gigs. I think it's good to recognize that public perception is important - I think the concept goes further than this one contest. An lot of public opinion and policy is made by people actively participating in polls. As steel players, we often complain that we're overlooked. You can't get recognized if you don't engage the world.

32.610% vs 29.268%. Not too shabby! Let's drive for 33% by midnight and we'll have a clean 4% lead.

About a month I would have predicted that we would have been little more than a "finisher" in this band race let alone be truly in the running for the competition. Through all of your efforts, your consistent and persistent efforts, we moved into first place this last weekend! You are all remarkable and we can't thank you enough!!

Now, I'll turn it back over to all of you wonderful folks. And Jim Cohen....you need to be our personal promotion manager without a doubt (and I'll always make sure that I correct folks when they call our instrument a "biscuit board", "Appalachian Tone Generator", "sideways guitar" or any of the other crazy names we've all heard).

Well, alright! We hit 33% today, thanks to you all. Now, we just want to push a little farther, to create that 4% gap. Could probably do that with around 75 more votes today. Let's go for it!
