Hello all,
I have been using Guitar Pro 5 to create tablature for my guitar students for a few years, however upon taking up pedal steel (I'm just a beginner though) it saddens me to find out that Guitar Pro will not allow me to create 10 string E9 tabs; I guess pedal steel is too custom for most tab software?
I am just learning how to use Apple's Logic 9 MIDI notation editor, and have figured out how to create a 10 string layout with an E9 tuning, however I am afraid I can't figure out how to input the frets that I need. Is there anyone on here using Logic that could help?
Also, I am just curious if any of you pedal steelers could recommend any other software for creating nice looking notation with E9 tabs?
Thanks!

ps. any logic users have any idea about typing frets into tab with logic's midi score editor? |

Hey Brian,
Yes I did. I had it converted a few days after I received it. You might know Bent Romnes from the forum here? He's a steel builder local to me. He graciously offered to convert it for me at no cost. In turn I've been helping Bent with Inventor blueprints for his next steel project. We've formed a solid friendship over it all... I guess that's the way it is with pedal steel players eh? It seems steel players are ready to do almost anything to help out another steel player! What a community! If you are ever in southern Ontario, let me know Brian!
Anyway, the BMI is an old guitar, but it's been kept up pretty well! It's a solid guitar for being 28 years old!!

I'm not sure about how to create a steel tab from Midi Score Editor, but I wonder if Jam Origin 2 could help you with inputing the steel part to midi... https://www.jamorigin.com/
It's audio to midi conversion software for guitar that works quite well. I have the paid version which lets you drop it in on an audio track as a plugin. Then you can route it to anything you want. |

John, there are setup instructions here, if that’s what you’re asking:
https://www.tabledit.com/help/english/steel_guitar.shtml
If you are looking for playback tips, good luck. About all it’s good for is double checking your notation with your ear. I use the cello sound in my computer’s crappy card, and it sounds god awful. The slides and bends play back weird too.
It really is a fantastic tab program though. A little wonky to print from, especially for posting on the forum, but once you get the process down it’s not bad. |
