Evans Preamp problem

Post by Austin Tripp »

The "output right" on my Evans Preamp has a problem. Every now and then it will make a sound sort of like someone blowing into a microphone it also does not have as much gain as the "output left" when there both hooked to the amps. I have changed ever chord in the rack unit and to my amps and the problem still occurs. Can someone please help me because I have no idea about audio or anything like that. Pleaseeeeeeeeeeee

Austin, the input on the right(#2)is supposed to have lower gain...I have two of these preamps and use them on a regular basis in the studio...until very recently I was using the input on the left(#1)...I was having a terrible problem with distortion-so I started poking around Google and ended up at the Evans website, where I learned that I should be using the input on the right...when I started doing that the distortion went away!A Fender amp is wired the same way-my friend Russ Pahl told me years ago to use input#2 on a Twin, etc.for a cleaner sound...don't know about the"blowing microphone"sound, but try that second input...you may be pleasantly surprised...

I run my guitar to input 1,, but the output right ( on the bottom of the preamp ) is the problem.

Austin,
Since you say you have tried changing cords and switching which amp each channel runs to, then it must be a problem with the preamp.

I know you bought it used at the Atlanta Show. If it is giving you problems this fast, you might want to contact the person you bought it from for a refund.

Next step would be to send the preamp to Evans for repair.

Austin

If you want to troubleshoot this is where I would start.

Disconnect everything you are using. Connect a sound source different for you guitar, like an iPod will full battery charge to the input of the amp. No effects or other units. Then hook it up to you power amp or speaker and see if the problem persists.

If it does you need to try to use a different power amp or different preamp to further isolate it to the preamp. Once you have done that I would do all of the simple stuff like cleaning jacks and pots.

If you still have the problem then it is off to a tech for repair.
