I recently acquired a used 12-string Mullen RP which was set-up as a Universal. I traded my Derby SD-10 for it (the Derby was a much-loved guitar for me, but here was a chance to finally try a 12-string).
The Mullen came to me with 7 and 6, and I gave full consideration to keeping the 'Uni' set-up so as to give it a fair trial but, every morning when I'd return to the guitar, it still didn't have a 'D' string at #9....
I contacted Mike Mantey and he gave me an amazingly reasonable quote for converting the guitar to Extended E9, despite my nit-picky set-up. I shipped the guitar to Colorado on October 19th, and UPS have dropped it off just half an hour ago. That's just eighteen days - thirteen of which it spent with UPS.
What great service for very little return! Every 'pull' I asked for is spot-on, and he's removed two of the pedals along with some parts in a weight-saving endeavour.
Mike: Thank you for a great job. Expert work, and done in a very timely manner.
Now to relearn all my 'grips', but it sure is great having that low E, G#, B and ..... D!!!!!! The guitar sounds great through my Nashville 112, by the way - this is going to be fun! _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

Check it carefully, Roger. I noticed you said "UPS dropped it off".

Good point, Bill, but no - they handled it with apparent great care (probably more by luck than anything else, but I wouldn't have wanted to carry it up my steps!
Hi, Brint:
'Day' set-up, of course, with a low E and G#.
Pedals 1,2 and 3 are standard, with pedal 2 raising all three G#s.
Pedal 4: Raises 12,11 and 10 to F#, A, and C# respectively.
Pedal 5 is the 'Isaacs' pull (5 and 6 up to C# and A)
LKL and LKR; Lowering and raising ALL the Es.
LKV: Raises 1 and 2 - E and G#
LKR2 (centrally placed, and a bit hard to reach) raises 6 and 11 from G# to A#.
RKL: Lowers both Bs to Bb
RKR: lowers 2 and 9 as per normal; also lowers the 12th to a D.
On reflection I should have had my Pedal 1 raise the 12th to F# (along with 4 and 5); I'd like to get the scale from the low E up on the first three pedals; I may have Mike send me an extra rod - even I can't screw up fitting just one pull (can I?)

I should add that those pictures are the ones taken by the last owner - the guitar now just has five pedals and six 'knees' (more than enough... ) _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

Very nice guitar. My first 12 string was a Mullen also. I took to the 9 th string being gone like a duck to water. I however have tried to have it back in a couple of times when I bought a guitar and cannot get used to it being in there again. I even eliminate it on a 10 string. I am sure you will be happy with the fine Mullen you have now. _________________ "The Oddball" A MSA Keyless with pedals to the right. |

They'll have to prise my 9th string 'D' out of my cold, dead.... (etc, etc!)
I can't imagine life without that string, and all you can get with it. Check the current thread on 'C6 sounds on E9' (or something like that) where someone makes the point that it's the D string, while at first it's not easy to appreciate why it's there, that is the vital bridge that opens so much up on E9.
Of course, this is subjective, and schooled by what music one wants to play - that 'D' opens up some slightly more advanced, or 'alternate', chords.
Jimmie Crawford taught me that when I was lucky enough to tour with him many years ago; what he showed me with the 9th as the 'root' was like an epiphany! Jimmie had a broad musical pallette...
(Mind you, I confess that, seeing as I've only been noodling on this guitar a few days, I've hit a few wrong strings!!! I'm sure it'll come, but I'm far from ready to take this one out to work!) _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!
