I found this one on YouTube today. Big E playing a very early woodneck Emmons with Jimmy Dickens on the Bobby Lord TV show, probably around '65 or so. I forget when that song came out. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

Herb,
I just got out of the yard after wrestling leaves all afternoon here in beautiful Tahlequah, Oklahoma and what a treat! Had I only know the BIG E had played this BIG HIT for Tater only 10 years earlier before I had two shows with him, I wouldn't have even shown up to pick! Tater never missed a lick 10 years later singing this hit and all his other greats! He's a trooper and is still going strong on the Opry as you well know. I'll never forget Jimmy standing there cryin' holding Raggedy Ann. (I think it was Raggedy Ann and not my playin' ) Thanks again for the effort Herb. Carl |

Herb,
It looks like Buddy is standing. I paused the clip and I don't see any pedal rods connected, and I don't hear him using pedals.Great looking steel thanks for posting the link.

Maybe Tater made him stand because he was under dressed for TV. |

Spider Wilson was playing lead guitar, but you may have noticed that Walter Haynes was playing rhythm guitar in the band. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

Odd to see Tater without his trademark hat and J-200.
Maybe they were trying for crossover appeal ...
At about 2:30 to 2:39 of the video, you can see Buddy's steel just to Walter Haynes' left. It appears to be sit-down height with a pedal bar.
"Bird of Paradise" was 1965.

I never saw Tater with a Super 400 before; does anyone know if it was his guitar? _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

Hmmm....I happen to be in the process of rebuilding one just like that guitar....
This photo was taken by the previous owner just before I bought it. It looks even better now! Invoice number is 2556. I'll post some current photos of it in another week or so. _________________ Best regards,

Spider Wilson and Howard Rhoten on the guitars, and I'm sure you'll recognize the steel player on this one. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

Yes, and thankfully, they didn't put him way off to the side out of camera range like the Bobby Lord video. |

Tater and Brenda Lee have an ongoing 50 year argument as to who is taller. Brenda tells Tater to take off his hat and Tater tells Brenda to take off her hair.
Hank Snow called up Tater one day and said: "Ah Potato, I'm feeling a little blue today. Why don't you come over?"

That's one shiny turd, Bird. Buddy almost singlehandedly redeemed that one ("Paradise").
(Give the bass man some credit, too. I dig his walk down.) |

Did anyone look at Tater doing "Another Bridge to Burn" on one of the other U Tube videos. Could any body determine if that was also Emmons playing? |

Love those old clips - here's one I hadn't seen before with Buddy and Earnest Tubb with what I assume is a Sho-Bud?
Buddy sure looked like he was having fun ...

upon enlarging the video it appears that the guitar Buddy is playing has the low-profile, soapbar type stereo pickups(though the body decal doesnt say "stereo")not standard single coils, and the changer mounts appear to be the open pillar, wraparound variety and not the later bolt-on type as shown in Lynn's pic, though thats also a nice looking instrument just as it sits. Herb, might this be your old wood neck stereo guitar in its original condition?
just curious. thanx for the vid |

That guitar that Jimmy is playing looks enormous. I think they're using a wide angle lens close up, which always makes near objects look bigger. Try putting your face right up to a camera and notice how big your nose looks. |

It's interesting to me to compare the way 2 players like Emmons and Charleton pick. With Emmons, he seems to always pick thumb and index finger, whereas Charleton picks thumb and middle finger.
BTW, I still love Curly's playing on this tune best, but I enjoyed this one a lot. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Mike, I beg to differ. Buddy E., is almost all thumb and middle finger. I believe Buddy C. is the same way. _________________ My best,

Oh, it looked to me like he was playing with his index on this one, I guess I just saw it wrong. FWIW, I go middle thumb, too. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |
