Guitar suggestion

Post by Joseph Salesi »

Hello,
I'm a noobie here and have an interest in learning lap steel. Does anyone have any suggestions for a low cost (but sounds pretty good) 6 or 8 string electric lap steel? My ears seem to be drawn to the Hawaiian sound of playing and not so much the overdrive of a blues guitar.

And if you have any recommendations for learning material (i.e. books, DVDs) for a beginner, it would be much appreciated.

I figure you guys know better than anyone else. :)

Thanks
JS

I have a Chandler RH-2 I like very much. String-through design, solid mahogany body, single-coil pickup. I see them selling used on eBay for $250-$350.

For instructional material, I don't think you can beat the Jerry Byrd course. It's pricey, but worth it.

Listening to Jerry Byrd's recordings is a joy and a great learning experience. When learning a new instrument, I find it very helpful to immerse myself in the music of a master and internalize the sound.

Welcome aboard, Joseph.

I buy, sell, repair, and teach Hawaiian (lap) Steel in all genres, ....and can set you up with one of several vintage lap steels to suit your request.

I can also guide you to beginning lap steel instruction books, some with audio or video examples and play-along.

I can also refer you to THE 2 main sources for authentic old Hawaiian Music with killer Steel Guitar.

It's better if you PM (private email) me by clicking the *pm* button at the bottom of this message, ....or email me from my profile page by clicking the *profile* button at the bottom of this message; We can commo allot more and looser in private and not tie up the forum here. But if you prefer the natures of the public forum here, you can just hit the reply button and I will be notified at home and come back here as soon as possible.
