I have to ship a steel - where can I find a box????
is there some sort of 'standard' carton that conforms to the size of a normal D-10 case? Maybe the Shipping Centers have something, but I thought I'd ask the question on here first.
Thanks, all.... _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

Roger,
Try the music stores in your area. Sometimes a keyboard carton will fit. Get two if you can, so you can double-box it. Also, music stores will/should have the "corner" buffers used in amplifier packing. |

In the past, I've bought and cut down U-Haul boxes. Their garment boxes in particular are quite sturdy cardboard. |

For about ten bucks I had a packaging store make up a special box, which I have used over and over with 100% success in shipping my Excel or checking it as baggage on airline flights. It's made of heavy cardboard and has a 4-inch slab of Styrofoam all around. It can be opened easily for inspection, and it weighs about 7 pounds when empty. _________________ Pioneers of Western Swing HOF, Seattle 2005

Hey Roger
Mr. Roy knows of what he speaks. The styro is a great idea, whether store-bought or homemade. There are various dimensions of polystyrene sheeting used for insulation at building supply places. Determine what you can get -- 3/4 to 1" sheets work great. Find a box that's 2" or more (even 4" as Roy suggests) larger than the case and cut the pieces to fit. Use double sided tape if you plan to reuse. Cut the box down if needed, or just add some styrofoam.
(or just do as Roy suggested and have someone make you one)
I'm beholden to our injured comrade Kurt Kowalski, who sold me the Sho-Bud I played at one of the Fort Myers shows we played together. When I later sold it, I was glad I kept the box. The styrofoam really cushions the contents well. From now on I will always ship that way.
BTW, Kurt was hurt in a motorcycle accident a few months back. Lets all send some prayers and good mojo his way. Just a thought. _________________ Larry Bell - email: larry@larrybell.org - gigs - Home Page

Now ain't that a shame!!! I've got 8 cartons that I've been trying to get rid of.They are the size of acoustic and solid bodys.Too small for a steel???.I talked to UPS and they charge #15 for a carton.I even have a bunch of bubble wrap and styro peanuts..
I can't see trashing them..Somebody can use them..
Well I did some measuring after starting this post and it looks like the acoustic boxes should work.. |

My Dekley just came in a Digital Drum Set Box and had 3 -4 inches of Syrofoam and packing all the way around, Box looked a little rough when it arrived on Monday, but the guitar and especially the case looked brand new. If you have to go out and buy a box ask for a TRI-WALL box add 3 inches to every side of the case for dimensions. Pack 3 inches of styrofoam on evert side and bottom and top. TriWalls are tough boxes, but expensive. Short of somebody running a fork lift fork thru it, they should handle anything.
The Fedex Driver wasn't happy it weighed 86.6 lbs and acted like he was doing me a favor by putting it up the steps on the front porch, but I insisted because it was starting to rain. These delivery drivers don't seem to think they are supposed to lift anything as part of their job anymore. To heck with them, I worked for 50 years until I retired and he was in better shape than I am at 68 years old. |

For a good box on the cheap, go to your local auto body shop. They get fenders and such in massive triple layer cardboard pieces. They will usually gladly give them away. Score one side with a utility knife and they bend on your cut line. Just be sure to double box it. _________________ Sierra U12 4+5 / 1933 Dobro / homemade Tele B-bender |

Thanks, everyone, for all this helpful info! I must say I'm leaning towards the styro-lining - maybe the box will survive a couple of trips at least.
I called our local Uhaul guy and he's low on stock right now - there's no huge panic, so I have some time to get this done.
Larry: You may be able to guess what this is for!!! Mike Mantey has agreed to switch the set-up from 'uni' to ext E9th on this 12-string Mullen for a very reasonable price. It's far better for him to do it than for me to start in on it and reduce the guitar to scrap! Damn' guitar's heavy, though!
I think I have too many pedals (7) for my needs but I'm still pondering what I'm going to have. Pedals 1-4 are easy, as are the standard five knees. Just as I think I'm figuring it all out, something occurs to me and it's 'back to the beginning'! _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

When I bought my psg a few years back, the gentleman that shipped it to me exposed the handle on the case. I thought that was a good idea. |

I been going to my local bicycle shop. They always have a few bike boxes that they're happy to get rid of. Just cut'em down to size w/ a box-knife. Pack, pad and tape then you're good to go.
They are strong, plus they usually have little handle holes already buiit-in. (I think the Fed-Ex guys don't toss them around as much, if there are handles to grab). |

Roger go to a store thaat sells Matresses, they pack in real thick cardboard and will give the cardboard to you freely, just see the man at the back of the store, he digs it out for me and I tip him for a drink.
Never had any damage using this system.

Strange as this may sound, Ive been having great luck with UPS lately....using their boxes and letting them pack the case in the box w/styro-spray and peanuts.
I sent a 'Bud Pro to Maine and it was fine, box undamaged. Just shipped the '70 p/p to Oklahoma so we'll see how that does, but Im confident. Also, if they pack it, insurance is valid, so......
my $0.02 worth, good luck, Roger,

I looked at UPS on Friday - they quoted around $30 which included $20 for a double-walled 'guitar box' that they would cut down and reinforce with styro or peanuts. As Mike says, the upside is that if they pack it they will, presumably, stand behind their work in the event of a claim. It does seem a lot of money to me, though - $30, and my package won't have even left Naples!
What frustrates me is that Emmons guitars come in a box that is the perfect size for the purpose. I imagine that the other manufacturers have access to similar boxes (my new Zum came in one), so why can't I find one???
I have the U-Haul laydown wardrobe box here but it seems rather lightweight to me. I need to ship this guitar to Mullen today, so I'll be making a decision any time now...
Thanks for all the responses. _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!
