I just wanted to let you know that if you have Fender style legs that won't tighten and hold their position, the clutch assembly is bad inside. Don Burrows makes the ring and collar and sells them through his website, http://bsgsteelguitars.com/ or you can contact him at wingingit@roadrunner.com. At $6.00 per leg, that's a helluva bargain. I bought 6 sets of rings and collars and Don had them to me in 2 days.
If you do replace the ring and collar, the way to do it is to unscrew the clutch, remove the inner 1/2" pipe, remove the rubber tip, then slide the ring on followed by the collar (the one with the split). Then, you slide the clutch back on and tighten and voila, your leg is fixed.

Thanks for the tip Mike, much appreciated.
I have another question though- what about leg wobble? I have a guitar where the 3 legs tighten fine, but you tell there is wobble at the clutch joint(NOT where the leg screws in at the base of the guitar). Can this be something that can be fixed with better fitting clutch rings? Maybe I need a larger tip on the end of the inner pipe. |

Yes Mike, Don Burrows is good at his craft.
He made for me four leg sockets for my T-8, 26" scale Stringmaster.
They have an 18 degree spread. The original ones were nearly vertical, because it's a very early Stringmaster.
These are the same as the later Stringmasters.

Jon, I'm not sure why that would happen, but it's possible the ring is not the right thickness, allowing just enough play to let it wiggle or possibly the tip on the inner end of the 1/2" pipe is not right. I don't know, good question.
