I guess I shouldn't say this, but lets not forget good ol' WD-40, yeah, I know its fish oil, but it sure makes my old Black MSA look good, I also wipe the strings with it, helps keep them longer. I would do this on mica covered guitars, never tried it on laquer steels.

I use Honda "spray cleaner and polish" it comes in a spray can from ( of course the honda shop) i spray it on a rag and wipe the whole guitar down with it, crome, aluminum and all, except i use leather conditioner on my loafer pad. You can even use it on glass. My son wipes his whole truck down with it, glass and all.
It leaves a nice luster on your formica and easy to use. |

I second Roger. It will clean up jeweled necks without polishing them out. The stuff is magic.  |

DO NOT be tempted to try any rubbing compound to restore lustre. All of the other suggestions here probably work fine. I have found that any of the spray type automotive waxes work quite well.

What about regular guitar polish, like GHS guitar gloss? Would that put a good shine on mica without hurtin the finish?

| Hand cleaner (like mechanics use ; the paste type) shines kitchen counter tops and gets them squeaky clean too . |

I never,ever performed a surface refurb on any one of
my Steel Guitars ; structural matters should be taken
care of right away,but disturbing the beautiful
patina,earned by mileage & years of working together

I used the car wax "Ice" it made my deck so slick and glossy , That when a Fly tried to land on it, it skidded from one end of my steel to the other end, and into the wall and broke it's neck..

I've been using 3M Marine Wax Polish, since most of my steels double as boat anchors anyway, and it seems to do a good job.
But...
For the last year I've been using a product called BTS (Bow To Stern) on my bass boat. It's a liquid polymer product that binds with the microscopic pores in the gel coat of boats, and also vinyl seat covers, that protects against UV rays and also provides an INCREDIBLY NICE showroom-type shine. The effect is fully achieved after 3 applications.
I'm going to try it today on one of my PP guitars, and see if it compares to the one I just waxed down.

A little diesel on a SOS Pad...
Use a quality car polish...not wax. It works for me on a black SD-10 GFI Ultra.
