Nah, it's not the boots you hate, 'cos they look great.
It's the disturbance of pedal to boot continuity that you hate. |

Sometimes the shafts are too tight at the ankle. All boots are definitely not the same. Especially fancy western styles with lots of designs on the shaft.
I like regular made in the USA, Justin ropers with leather soles and flat heels. I wear them alot before I play in them to soften them up. |

Steve,
Have you tried the low quarter, square dance style? I used to wear this style when I was playing clubs.(a long, long, long time ago)

I made it through last night, but my feet were/was on auto-pilot. I couldn't feel a thing.
It's not the ankles, this pair has very soft ankles and uppers, it's the stiffness of the soles. I took a rasp to the bottoms just to get a little traction.
Fortunately the EMCI was up in the rotation, and it almost plays itself.
Bill, I did look at the Sheplers site and saw a few styles that might work, I just never warmed up to paying for half a boot
Tonight's the p/p so it'll be just a little more of a workout.

I was at a boot shop in Austin, Texas some years ago and they had a pair of "Shoots" in the window.
They were waiting for them to be picked up by Willy Nelson.
They consisted of boot tops sewn onto a pair of tennis shoes.
Kind of like the ones Bo posted. |

I have worn cowboy boots all my life. In the last ten years it has become a real nightmare to buy a new pair of them and break them in. My foot was more forgiving when I was young. At the price of boots today it is not cool to have a pair for several months and find out they are not going to break in. So here is what I have done. I know that I wear a 10.5 in Tony Lama and in Justin. I go into ebay and search for those two makes in my size. If I can find some that have been worn just enought to take the edge off I can normally get them for under $65 plus shipping. If they do not work for me I just sell them again on ebay. I have only found one pair that did not work for me. It is a little bit of trouble and a guy could get stung but I am not spending $200 for a pair of new boots that I might not be able to wear. |

Wear loafers. You dont have to wear boots to be a
cowboy.
3 men in a pickup truck. Which is the real cowboy?
The one in the middle. He dont have to drive or
open the gate. |

I rock back and forth on the A&B pedals and I just can't twist my foot or bend my ankle enough with Cowboy Boots. I just go Indian and wear these that are so unbelievably comfortable, flexible and I can feel the pedals through leather (no sole).

Dave,
Sounds like we've had similar experiences. Today's prices are excruciating!
Andy,
Been there. In my area, boots are daily wear for many and good used ones are hard to find. I've even put "wanted" ads on Craig's list.
The Tennilama's are pretty funny... _________________ Always remember you're unique..... Just like everyone else |

that EMCI is up and running. How did that whole project go? I'd be interested in more 'after' pictures.

I think Bo Legg has the right idea. I can't play or even walk in cowboy boots. How did the cowboy's do it? I wear a pair of San Francisco shoes when I play steel. I need to feel those pedals. |

Bill,
Sent you an email with some pics!
Dennis,
I've got a couple of older pairs of boots that are so comfortable I get cranky at the thought of having to take them off. The problem is they're scuffed and battered past the point of re-dying/polishing. And pedal feel, these are worn so thin I can feel the scratches in my p/p pedals!
I know one morning soon I'll wake up and my wife will inform me that she finally had to "put 'em down".
It's always been a difficult transition for me.... _________________ Always remember you're unique..... Just like everyone else |

Cowboy boots were designed for "cowboying", not playing pedal steel.
The pointy toes were for putting them in the stirrups.
The high tops were for going through brush and rattlesnake bites.
The heels were designed to dig into the dirt when you roped a calf or steer.
There is a brother of Casey Tibbs who has a custom boot shop in Ft. Pierre, South Dakota.
If you go into his shop, he asks you just what you are going to be using your boots for.
I'm sure if you told him that you were going to use them to play pedal steel guitar, he's throw you out on your ear! |

Steve, guess I'll have to go down to my local Goodwill and find me a really worn-out pair of western boots, what do you think? Maybe that has been my problem, new boots, too stiff, too shiny, on and on. I still have problems with the long toes getting hung-up in the pedal rods. They'd be great for stepping on cockroaches in corners though. I always liked the looks of cowboy boots and even own a pair of Justins yet. By the way Steve, how about those Rittenberry's? Still wish I had Steve Hotra's as my second guitar. That green. There's just something about it. And the tone of that guitar was to die for. |

I started wearing Ariat boots to play steel. The Ariat boots are more "athletic" in design so they move better, and have composite soles rather than leather so they don't slip on the pedals. Not a good dancing boot, because they don't slide, but great for playing steel. Either that or a pair of Justin Chuka lace ups that work well, too. _________________ Zum D10, Show Pro D10, '59 Bassman RI, Roland Cube 80XL |

Erv,
We have stirrups here, and brush and rattlesnakes, and calves and steers.....and steel guitars!
And thanks for the warning about Tibbs.... _________________ Always remember you're unique..... Just like everyone else |

Steve,
I believe you but I'm afraid most of the people wearing boots in Arizona have never seen a cow!
(especially those around Scottsdale or Sedona) |
