TV Country Show out of Abilene in the early
54/55 I think? I was only a kid & that's
when I fell in love with the Steel Quitar.
For got the Steel players name but I think
he lives in FT. Worth. |

| Autry- That was before my time. I came to this area in 1983. When I first came to the Abilene area, I did some work with the son of Slim Willet's fiddle player(Shorty Underwood). The son's name is Ronnie Underwood, a super bassplayer/singer. The show that I think your speaking of was called the Big State Jamboree. Alot of musicians in this area were apart of that show. A new version or reenactment of the show is currently being performed in the Paramount Theatre on some Saturdays, I believe. Thanks for your post. Come on to Abilene on the 15th for our get together! |

I played the Big State Jamboree with Shorty Underwood and His Brushcutters...Try that one on for size...Slim Willett was the MC of the Big State Jamboree in the City Auditorium. Hell of a long time ago....early 50's.... We will see you guys in Abilene for sure on the 15th.

Randall: I think Jack Schults ( may be mispelled) might have played with Slim Willet @ some time not sure. My son owns the Town & Country Drive-Inn that reopen a few years ago, & has been making noise about buying the paramount theather in Abilene.

Added for two reasons, maybe a little historical info on Willett and to bump this little get together up the line.
If I'm not mistaken, and memory is the second thing to go, Slim worked at KRBC radio for a long time and helped host the Big State Jamboree. I left for another Air Force base shortly after the release of the hit song, Don't let the stars get in your eyes. . I can remember that his big hit, "Don't let the stars --------" wasn't the A side of the record. I don't remember what the A side was. I think he recorded on the "4 Star" label.
Shorty Underwood was the finest fiddler I've ever met, and I've seen a couple. He let everyone get a slice of the watermelon when it came his turn. I hope to meet his son there. We had a slew of old pictures of the outfit and also of the participants on the Jamboree, but they were distroyed in the "Great Shannon Housefire of 1989".
My wife just reminded me that one of Willett's songs was "Tool Pusher from Snyder" and I had completely forgotten that.
Hope a bunch of folks meet us in Abilene and view the new guitar. Bob T. I'll see you there, the Great One willing and you know there's not gonna' be any creeks rising here.

Well the trip was great and I certainly didn't get to stay as long as I would have liked. I had to get back for a concert for the senior citizens here in the county, but what I saw I certainly enjoyed...Randall Palmore and company did a fantastic job of organizing their first steel show and even though the turnout was not as big as they would have liked, it was certainly an appreciative crowd. I only got to hear two players, Larry Tolliver, and Bobby Tuttle. Both were exemplary pickers; two distinct different styles--Larry would probably remind you of an " attacker " of the instrument. His licks and chops were super. Let me tell you this guy is "fast, fast, fast". "Flaming fingers" would probably be a good description of his right hand. Bobby Tuttle, on the other hand, is the "smoothie style" picker. I admire his ability to switch necks mid-song...Super players both. I only wish I could have stayed for the other guys. The Rains guitar is one more excellent instrument. Larry Tolliver played a D-10 Rains at the show and the tone is to die for. Super guitars and I was able to meet one of the builders Bob Rains. What a gentle man,,,,he's big too. Glad to see my old friend Bob Roundtree, he played bass in the back up band. What the hell is it that steel players become excellent bass pickers? Maybe an exercise in frustration. I must apologize for the pictures but I haven't had the time to have them developed, but I will post them shortly. To all the guys, thanks for having us and making us feel welcome. Randall P. you better plan on having one of these at least Bi-monthly. We'll certainly attend.

Better late than never. Finally got the pictures processed and scanned in to the 'puter.... want to say something about hospitality. Randall Palmore and company are super organizers and good folks.. You get around the central Texas area, look 'em up, they'll treat you so many ways you'll like one of them... Sorry I didn't have time to shoot all the pickers, but I had personal engagements made previously....here are some of the photos of the Rains Guitars and some of the folks who attended. I also want to recognize Casey Tolliver, Larry Tolliver's son.... With youngsters like these around, REAL COUNTRY MUSIC is in good hands. We just need more of 'em. Here's the website.
