The Australian ABC (public broadcaster) popular music comedy TV quiz show "Spicks and Specks" gave the PSG some time in the spotlight this week. They have a regular segment where well known pop songs are played by incongruent genre/ethnic bands (jug, gypsy, bouzouki, chamber etc)and the teams have to try to guess the song.
This week the songs were played on PSG by Ed Bates (I think that was the name)on a D10 Emmons.
Got my attention. I've often wondered where they find the (sometimes very strange) genre bands, anyone know Ed and what his usual gigs are?

Dang! I missed it three times (once on ABC 1, once on the repeat on ABC 2 and again on the repeat on ABC 1). Can't help with Ed's gigs either.
The steel guitar is a hard mistress. She will obsess you, bemuse and bewitch you. She will dash your hopes on what seems to be whim, only to tease you into renewing the relationship once more so she can do it to you all over again...and yet, if you somehow manage to touch her in that certain magic way, she will yield up a sound which has so much soul, raw emotion and heartfelt depth to it that she will pierce you to the very core of your being.

The first time I heard of Ed was when he played for the Sports { who listens to the radio }. He began playing steel soon after the demise of that band and has been busy ever since .
BTW he is know in my house as Ed bloody Bates as every time my wife asked " who is playing steel for --insert artists name -- ? my answer would be Ed bloody Bates !

Ed played a lot with the Black Sorrows (Australian Pop Band), didn't he?
He has also popped up on a Jetty Road (Australian Country band) album I listened to recently

I saw that Spicks and Specks slot (a very nice suprise). Ed had a great reverb-less sound. Nice and raw and honky.
