Keep it simple, slow and melodic, and pay attention to the mood and message of whatever song you're playing, and you'll get there |

Last week I had a realy lucky day & one of my friends introduced me to Ralph over the telephone. I have to say, when he talks, he sounds like the guy who layed down all those great licks! He told me that the things he recorded with Buck Owens early on were done with a home-made steel that he put together, and when he showed up later with the fender 1000, Buck was disappointed because he prefered the sound of the one Ralph built! Ain't that something... |

You mean all steel guitars don't sound alike? Knock me over with a feather. |

There is something to be said for those simple steel rides like Mooney took on this video. Nice ride and certainly in stark contrast to much of his other, faster work.
Great steeler!!

Read a story about Mr. Mooney and his steel one time, was it true [I don't know] Anyway he was booked to do a session[maybe on Capitol] with a new female artist,I think it was Wanda Jackson. He showed up with that old guitar held together with wire, etc. She went to the producer and said she did'nt want him on her song when she saw that old beat up guitar. But they went ahead and used him. After the session she told the producer [I WANT HIM ON ALL MY SESSIONS.] YOU BETCHA, DYK?BC. _________________ Hard headed, opinionated old geezer. That video clip is the timeless genius of Ralph Mooney. I once had a steel player tell me that "Mooney can't play". I nearly got violent. |

Looks like he's got the E-9th on the inside neck here.
Unusual. (That is E-9th he's playing, Isn't it?) |
