I would like to replace the single-coil pickup in my Marlen, as, even though it is one of the best single coils that I have heard, it has too much hum.

Does the Alumitone have single-coil characteristics, without the hum, and will it fit in my Marlen.

The slot is quite narrow, at 1 3/8".
The length is 4 1/2", and the height about 7/8"

Carter has got a link to a pdf file with dimensional specs on this page:

https://www.steelguitar.com/resource/pickups/alumitone.html

Looks like you are out of luck. Won't go in my Bud 12 either.

Yes. However on the only guitar that I had a single coil and then an Alumitone in, they didn't get played within a few hours of one another and I don't trust my otic memory well enough to make a true A/B comparison. Definitely quiet. Definitely clean and even.

Looks like Jon got you an answer while I was typing. Here goes anyway. The Lace website has specs:

http://www.lacemusic.com/

From the home page, choose Wiring Diagrams, then look for links to specs from there.

Email Lace with any info you need - they are great at quick responses. Include your phone number and they may call you for more specific info.

FWIW I have an Alumitone P90 in one of my guitars, and it has the P90's single coil on steroids punch with zero hum.

I'm looking into these as well, and I really need to be positive about the hum issue. Would you say the Alumitone is as quiet as a humbucker? i.e. if I were to kick on my GT2 at full metal distortion, would the Alumitone present the same lack of self-noise as a humbucker?

The reason I ask this is, looking at the Alumitone, it seems to me to be an update of the Lace Transensor, which, while quieter than a standard single coil, was NOT as quiet as a humbucker.

Thanks!

I was at the STL Steel Con this weekend and made a point to check them out. Great tone and very quiet..."THEY" claim, tone like a single coil and noise like a humbucker.
They are currently too big for my Klines as well but are close to releasing a new, smaller and slightly redesigned PU, so we with tiny holes may use them. I don't think the tone will suffer with the bending of the verticle ends but time will tell. A foto of Jim Spanos holding a couple of them.

That pretty much sums it up for me as well. I have them in both my Zums, and I like them better than the single coils.

I have one on my Rains that i replaced a single with and my opinion is that it does'nt sound like a humbucker at all, it's definatly a single coil sound but better, and very quiet.

So...what's the best source [most economical] for these for 10 string steel? Can you order direct from Lace? Do you need attaching parts?

Feel free to email me privately or post to my pm.

Twayne - for a short while I had both an Alumitone P-90 and 'bucker on my 400, tried wiring with both normal and reversed polarity and had no noise difference between the two. My 400 has a ton of extra shielding on it because of the extra wiring and 3-picckup configuration, but single-coils..."normal" ones...still have a bit of noise. I could no detect any from the P-90, and just a little from my Stringmaster pickup. So as far as I can tell it's as silent as a HB.

But if it's that critical, just email or call Lace. They will NOT throw a sales-job on you; they are straight shooters and very good guys to talk to.

Thanks Jim! I'll drop the guys at Lace a line. I plan on replacing one of my lap steel pups with the Alumitone P-90 and want to use my Skreddy Mayo with it in some pretty electrically noisy environments. I've just never been happy with standard humbuckers no matter what I do with 'em. Sad

Not to hijack this thread, just a question. What would the Alumitones be compared to, i.e. 18.5k, BL 710. GL E-66? How are they "gauged". You get the picture. I have read the website, just trying to gain a little knowledge about them. They sound like something I would like to try out. Thanks for any input. Smile

Larry, i replaced an Emmons SC with the alumitone and the Emmons was wound at about 19.8, and this PU sounds very close to the SC but better. I just made a few ajustments on my EQs to dial it in. I just had to dial back my lows a little but it sounds great from the 1rst fret to Hughey land.

Jeff Surratt at Show-Pro has them in stock. I bought one yesterday and put it on last night. Sounds wonderful.
