Topic: Change-able Front Aprons? |

I am really surprised no steel builder has came up with a Change-able front apron model of there steel?? Seems to me it would be easy to do and you could change to any color or look you wanted. You would think it would be a rather inexpensive option also? The basic steel could be ordered in any color and then have the additional aprons for sale as extras. Am I crazy here or not? Or do they already have them??

Of all the pedal steels I've worked on, Excel is the closest to what you are asking for.
Their front apron consists of the mica glued onto a thin (1/8") sheet of plywood and this just slides into a couple of aluminum channels on the top and bottom of the guitar.
However, you would need to remove one of the end pieces in order to slide the apron in and out. |

Neil,
You can change out the front apron on all BMI's. Simply remove the end plate corner and bam  Seriously, it's that easy,

I love the idea of convertable front aprons. Here is a DIY "Quickie" solution.
Go to a sign maker and get some thin mil contact vinyl.
If you apply it carefully, you cannot tell that it's not mica, and I cannot perceive any sound degradation. When you are tired of the color, or sell the instrument (honesty is always the best policy in my book) just pull it off (carefully) and voila! Yer original geetar.

Buddy had an EMCI that had interchangable front aprons. One of them had the logo for the Nashville Network in the center. At the time Buddy was on a lot of the shows on TNN, (New Country, Church Street Station, etc...)

Guess the only thing less important, is the Steel Guitar itself......in todays country????? I personally don't like that fact.

| Changing front mica on a GFI (Ultra model, not the Expo) should be fairly simple as there are no end plates to contend with. |
