My opinion is that the top ten players in the world are all number one.
Surely a candidate for number 1 would have to be a full time pro with a successful recording career and would have toured extensively with many major artistes.
Many of these players do not promote themselves on the internet,U Tube and the like, they do'nt need to.

I don't think there's a #1 steel player cause there's always someone better somewhere , but what he should of said instead is that David Hartly is his favorite steel player, cause you can't compare guys like Buddy or Paul, Tommy , Loyd or John ect... cause they all have a different style of playing and it all comes down to what style you like better.
It's the same with beers... some like bud some coors or canadian or alpine beer here in the maritime...but it all comes down to taste and what you like better.

Not to be a fly in the ointment...but why do we have to rate players at all? It just creates instant controversy.
Everybody...even a rank beginner....is good in some way. As mentioned in a previous thread, pros rip of licks from amateurs as much as the other way around.
But ratings and polls are just "competitive" things where no competition is needed. Just look how PO'd some players get when Jerry Garcia is mentioned. It NEVER would be an issue if it hadn't been for Guitar Player ratings polls in the 70's.

IMHO, it's fine to rate to your heart's content -- just realize that it is JUST YOUR OPINION. Saying someone is #1 doesn't make it SO.

Hi Jim,
I think this is just a light fun thing here, not all that serious. Everybody agrees all these names bandied around in this thread are the greats, including Hartley because he is so good. And everybody has their own favorite #1. So this thread as a "rating" really means nothing more than a bunch of guys having some opinions.
For a "rating" to have any validity there would have to be a consensus of peers to adopt a set of Standards by which to measure, and a final Authority to make the final call. Never happen. In My Opinion.

I've told this story before but bears repeating. Willy Nelson was at Panther Hall in Ft Worth and at this time the big discussion was on about who was #1. Willie asked Jimmy Day what # he was and Jimmy held up two fingers. Willy said why are you #2. Jimmy said everybody else was #1 so he must be #2. I told Jimmy that if everybody else was #1 and he was #2, I must be #3 so I was completly satisfied. cc

To my ears
I'm the best steel player I've ever heard. Then again, I don't hear too good.
